ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After falling to a tough Wartburg squad Saturday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team wanted to close out the weekend with a win before taking on another tough opponent next weekend.
The Bennies scored a single goal midway through the first half, but that would prove to be all that they needed. The goal from
Erica Golenzer – her third of the season – lifted CSB to a 1-0 win over UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon at the OAC. CSB is now 2-1 overall.
It was the Warhawks (1-1) with some early chances Sunday, but first year goalie
Annie Waters made a save and one shot went wide left to keep the score 0-0. After an offsides call on the Bennies,
Sydney Burns got the ball to the right of the Whitewater net and sent it to the middle of the box to Golenzer, who was on her own in front of the Warhawks' goalie. Golenzer tapped the ball into the back of the net to give her team a one-goal lead.
Both teams had chances later in the first half, but neither were able to capitalize. After Saint Benedict controlled the ball much of the first half, Whitewater put some pressure on in the second, and had some late opportunities in front of the Bennies' net and junior keeper
Paige Kahlmeyer, but the CSB defense held strong.
Waters and Kahlmeyer each made one save to combine for the shutout, and Waters picked up the first win in net in her Bennie soccer career.
Whitewater had 10 total shots to CSB's eight, but the Bennies held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior
Roxy Veldman put up two shots on net.
The Bennies are off now until Saturday, Sept. 11, when they head to Eau Claire, Wis., to take on another tough opponent in UW-Eau Claire. CSB returns home Wednesday, Sept. 15, against St. Kate's.
