ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After not scoring a single goal for three weeks, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team scored three within the first 25 minutes of Saturday's game.
CSB – which hadn't scored since
Erica Golenzer scored a single goal against UW-Whitewater on Sept. 5 – come out firing and ended up with five goals from five different people in a 5-0 shutout of Gustavus.
The shutout was the icing on the cake for a day that included the naming of the Sister Lois Wedl Athletic Center at halftime of the game. CSB athletic director
Kelly Anderson Diercks and Saint Benedict transitional president Laurie Hamen presented Wedl with the honor at midfield surrounded by the CSB dance team and in front of a crowd that included many of Wedl's family and friends.
The first half was an exciting one for the Bennies (3-3-2, 1-1) to get the crowd warmed up for the halftime celebration.
Erica Golenzer started the scoring with what ended up being the game-winner in the 17
th minute when she took a pass from
Caralyn Conners to the right side of the Gusties' net and sent a shot across the box and into the back of the net.
First year
Alli Voss made it 2-0 three minutes later when she scored the first goal of her CSB career off an assist from
Sydney Burns, and
Ella Young notched the team's third goal 30 seconds later on a free kick following a Gustavus penalty. She arched the kick over the wall of Gustie defenders and into the corner of the net.
The Bennies tallied their fourth goal early in the second half when
Roxy Veldman notched her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Golenzer, and the team wrapped up scoring in the 69
th minute when
Sydney Burns scored off an assist from Voss.
While the team's offense made the game a high-scoring one, it was a trio of Bennie goalies who kept Gustavus off the board and helped preserve the shutout. First year
Annie Waters earned the save after making three saves in the first 45 minutes of play, junior
Paige Kahlmeyer came in and notched three saves in 30 minutes and first year
Natalie Welinski made a career-high six saves in just 14 minutes of play as the Gusties finally found their footing offensively. The trio combined for 12 saves as Gustavus (4-4, 1-2) outshot CSB 19-16, including 12-8 in shots on net.
CSB is on the road Wednesday when it heads to Moorhead for a 4 p.m. game at Concordia, and returns home Saturday, Oct. 2, when it hosts Augsburg.
