ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After picking up its first win in a MIAC Tournament game since 2013 at the end of the 2019 season, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team had to wait longer than expected to take the field again and build on that momentum.
After a pair of scrimmages against Division II teams earlier this spring, CSB takes the field for an official game for the first time since Nov. 6, 2019, this weekend to kick off Spring 2021. The Bennies host Bethel at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 11, in a MIAC contest at the Outdoor Athletic Complex to start its six-game season.
Per CSB policy, 150 fans are allowed in the grandstands at the OAC soccer field - masked and socially distant. Live stats and video will also be available
here.
Head coach
Steve Kimble returns some key faces from his 2019 squad that finished 11-6-2 overall and 7-3-1 and took fourth in the MIAC. The Bennies beat Carleton 3-2 in the first round of the MIAC Tournament before falling to top-seeded Augsburg in the semifinals to end the season.
The team heads into the season looking to replace Megan Thompson, who earned Third Team All-American accolades after setting the school record for goals in a season in 2019. She finished the year third in Division III with nine game-winning goals. Thompson was one of 10 seniors on the 2019 roster that also included two-time All-MIAC Honorable Mention goalie Kendall Koenen and two-time All-MIAC defender Meghan Verkinderen.
Kimble brought in a class of 10 first years and one sophomore to fill in the holes left by graduation and, along with some key returners, he is looking for his team to pick up right where it left off.
Roxy Veldman returns for her junior season after finishing second on the team with 18 points and seven goals last season, and sophomore
Chloe Miller is also back after recording five points on two goals and an assist as a first year. Defender
Abby Worthington is also back for her senior season after earning All-MIAC Honorable Mention accolades last year.
Sophomore
Paige Kahlmeyer returns to take over in the net for the Bennies. She saw time in four games as a first year in 2019 and finished 1-0-1 with 16 saves and two shutouts, including a career-high seven saves in a big win against Loras.
Four of CSB's six games are at home in Spring 2021, including a Tuesday evening matchup against St. Thomas in what is likely the last meeting between the two teams before the Tommies transition to Division I. CSB wraps up the season Sunday, May 2, at St. Kate's.
