ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team was less than two minutes away from its first win over Augsburg since 2018 Saturday afternoon in St. Joe, but the Auggies kept things interesting.
Augsburg scored late in regulation, and the two teams played a pair of scoreless overtimes and the game finished 1-1 in double overtime.
After a scoreless first half, Saint Benedict (4-3-3, 2-1-2) took a 1-0 lead over the Auggies in the 57
th minute when
Olivia Miller scored off a corner kick from
Abby Willenbring. Willenbring's corner kick from the right side of Augsburg's net went right to Miller, who snuck it around several Auggie defenders and into the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Both teams had several wide shots, and
Paige Kahlmeyer had back-to-back saves in the 70
th minute to keep Augsburg off the board. The Auggies had a trio of shots that went wide, and then in the 88
th minute they snuck a shot past Kahlmeyer in traffic to tie the game at 1-1.
Caralyn Conners had a shot on net to start the first overtime, and Augsburg had a trio of wide shots, but no one was able to score. The Bennies controlled the ball much of the second overtime, and
Melissa Honnold had an open shot that went wide to start the final 10 minutes of play. She and
Alli Voss both added shots that went wide, and Conners had another shot on net, but the game ended tied.
Clair Lehmann,
Lindsay Mueller and
Clara Noack all put shots on net in the first 22 minutes of play for the Bennies, but the Auggies stopped all three.
Annie Waters also had a trio of saves to keep Augsburg off the board and the game scoreless after the first 45 minutes.
Saint Benedict outshot Augsburg 19-17, including 10-7 in shots on goal. Waters and Kahlmeyer both finished with three saves, and Lehmann and Conners both had two shots on net.
CSB is off now until Saturday, Oct. 9, when it hosts St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m. at the OAC.
