ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – An impressive performance from the Bennies' offense and more solid defensive work turned into 3-0 shutout of Hamline Saturday afternoon for the CSB soccer team.
The win for the Bennies keeps them locked in third place in the MIAC standings with a 5-1-2 conference record and 7-3-3 overall record. Hamline is in tenth place in the MIAC conference standings after the loss with a 2-5-1 conference record and a 6-6-1 overall record. CSB is down to just three games left in regular season play.
CSB wasted no time putting the pressure on Hamline's defense and goalkeeper Lauren Sicora. Alli Voss put back-to-back shots on net in the first minute of the first half. Then Ella Hinkemeyer with two shots back-to-back, Ellie Wohnoutka with one, and Roxy Veldman with two shots within 6 seconds of each other just in the first 15 minutes of the game. All of these chances and it was just a matter of time before the Bennies were going to break the scoring ice.
In the 32nd minute, Abby Willenbring scored her second goal of the season and got the Bennies on the board with help from a pass from Clair Lehmann to take the 1-0 lead over the Pipers.
In the second half, the Bennies didn't back down from their first half offensive take over, putting shots on Hamline's goalkeeper early on once again. Roxy Veldman would bring lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute with a great pass across from Sydney Burns.
Goal number three for the Bennies was scored in the 68th minute of the second half by Lana Krautkremer, her first goal of the season, giving CSB the 3-0 lead. The Pipers weren't able to get through the Bennie's tough defense and CSB would come away with the shutout win.
CSB had a whopping 31 shots, including 20 on net, while the Pipers had 6 shots with 4 on net. Junior goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer had two saves in the first half and first year Annie Waters had two saves in the second half to secure the shutout victory.
CSB is back in action next on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. on the road in St. Paul, Minn. when they take on Macalester.
