ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Heading into the second half of Tuesday's MIAC game at Bethel, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team found themselves in a situation they haven't been in much this season.
The Bennies were down 2-1 at halftime on the road in Arden Hills, but a pair of second-half goals fixed that problem.
Roxy Veldman scored early in the second half and
Alli Voss scored late to left the Bennies to a 3-2 win over the Royals.
The win vaulted Saint Benedict up to third in the MIAC standings with four games left in the regular season. CSB is now 6-3-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the league.
CSB took an early lead Tuesday afternoon when
Roxy Veldman scored an unassisted goal after she got a breakaway and found the back of the net in the seventh minute of the game. The Royals tied the score on a goal off a corner kick in the 20
th minute, and took a 2-1 lead just before halftime when one shot went off the crossbar and the rebound was sent past goalie
Annie Waters in the 41
st minute.
That lead didn't hold much past halftime, however. Veldman's second goal of the game – and sixth of the season – came in the 48
th minute after she took a pass from Voss and beat to defenders to take the shot.
Both teams had chances to take the lead in the next 30-plus minutes, but neither was able to capitalize until Voss scored her second goal of the season when she split two defenders to take a shot just outside the box in the 84
th minute. The Bennies were then able to keep Bethel (5-8, 3-4) off the scoreboard for the remaining five minutes.
Saint Benedict put up 25 shots to the Royals' 14, and held a 13-9 margin in shots on net. Voss finished with five shots on net and Veldman and
Sydney Burns both added two. Waters finished the first half with four saves and
Paige Kahlmeyer made three second-half saves to help her team come away with the win.
The Bennies are back in action and back at home Saturday, Oct. 16, when they host Hamline at 3:30 p.m. at the OAC.
