Late goal lifts CSB to historic win over Tommies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team reached the 10-win milestone in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon.

Down 2-1 to St. Thomas after the second period, the Bennies tied the game in the 11th minute of the third period, and Mollie Wise scored her second goal of the weekend and 13th of the season on the power play in the final 1:30 of the game to lift her team to a 3-2 win over the Tommies.

Not only does Saturday's win mark CSB's first against the Tommies since 2016 and just the fourth in program history, it also marks the team's 10th overall win this season. With a record of 10-9-1, Saint Benedict has reached the 10-win mark for the first time since 2001-02. This marks just the sixth time in program history that the Bennies have won 10 or more games in a season.

After falling 2-1 to UST (12-6-3, 11-3) in each of the team's last two meetings – including Friday in St. Paul – the Bennies were looking to flip the script Saturday. After a scoreless first period that saw CSB outshoot the Tommies 11-9, the Bennies broke the scoreless tie just 50 seconds into the second period when Annika Brodt notched her seventh goal of the game. Julia Pias earned the assist after getting the puck to Brodt right in front of UST's net.

CSB's celebration was short lived, however, as the Tommies tied the game less than 30 seconds later on a top-shelf shot over the shoulder of CSB goalie Ally Frantzick. St. Thomas took a 2-1 lead exactly five minutes later at the 6:18 mark, and that's where the score would stay throughout the remainder of the second period and well into the third.

St. Thomas outshot the Bennies 11-7 in the final period, but CSB made two of those seven shots count. CSB started the third on the power play, and got a second power-play opportunity a few minutes later, but couldn't cash in on either. The Bennies also killed off a penalty, and after Maria Wallace and Wise put shots on net, Brodt got the puck in front of the net again and was able to shovel the puck into the back of the net. Wise and Lily Aamodt got credit for the assists.

The Tommies got off a flurry of shots after CSB tied the game, but Frantzick saved two straight, and then she had a big save and the Bennies were able to block several shots when killing off another late penalty. A minute after CSB's penalty kill was complete, the Tommies went back into the box for slashing, and CSB was able to cash in. Pias took a shot from back by the blue line straight in front of the net, and Wise got a stick on it to tip it into the back of the net to put the Bennies up one with 1:22 left to play. Courtney Conlin and Pias got credit for the assists on Wise's goal.

The Tommies pulled their goalie with 1:15 left and put several shots on net, but Frantzick had a save, several shots were wide and the CSB defense got in the way of one, and the Bennies held on for the win.

St. Thomas outshot the Bennies 30-24, but Frantzick made 28 saves to keep her team in the game and in line for the win. Wise finished with seven shots on net and Myka Stave added four. CSB killed off two power plays, and Frantzick made seven saves while her team was shorthanded.

Saturday's win puts CSB in a tie for sixth in the MIAC with four games left in the regular season. With a 5-9 conference record, Saint Beneidct is just behind Bethel, which is 6-8 in the MIAC. The top six teams make the league's postseason tournament.
