Schneider scores as CSB drops close game to Gusties

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A career night in net from Ally Frantzick and a third-period goal from Riley Schneider had the College of Saint Benedict hockey team right where it needed to be early in the third period against No. 5 Gustavus.

But after a goal that would have put the Bennies up 2-1 was called off, the momentum swung the Gusties' way as they went on to score three unanswered goals and CSB fell 4-1 Friday night in St. Cloud. The loss – combined with a Bethel/St. Kate's tie Friday night – puts CSB in seventh in the MIAC standings with three games left in the regular season. The Bennies are 10-10-1 overall and 5-10 in the MIAC.

The first period was scoreless Friday night thanks to 15 saves by Frantzick and some big defensive plays to keep the Gusties off the board. Courtney Conlin and Myka Stave put back-to-back shots on net, but both were saved in the first.

The Gusties got on the board at the 13:46 mark of the second period, but Frantzick stopped 17 other shots to keep it a 1-0 game heading into the third and final period.

Schneider scored her second goal of the season at the 4:30 mark of the third period on an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1, and less than three minutes later it appeared that the Bennies had taken a 2-1 lead when the puck went into the back of the Gusties' net after a scrum in front.

But the goal was waved off to keep the game tied at 1-1, and Gustavus (16-3-2, 12-1-2) scored at the 7:20 mark to go up 2-1, added a power-play goal two minutes later, then iced the game with an empty-net goal at the 18:50 mark. Frantzick was pulled from the game for the final minute of play, and Conlin had a pair of shots on net, but the Gusties held on for the win.

Saint Benedict finished with 20 shots on net to Gustavus' 48. Conlin had five shots on net to lead the team and Mollie Wise added three. Frantzick finished the game with a career-high 44 saves.

The two teams are back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Peter.
