McGinty scores first career goal in double OT tie

DECORAH, Iowa – Rosie McGinty's first career goal was an important one.

McGinty scored in the 80th minute against Luther to put the College of Saint Benedict soccer team up 1-0, and her goal ended up helping the team to a 1-1, double overtime tie with the Norse Sunday afternoon in Decorah, Iowa.

CSB wraps up its Iowa road trip 0-1-1, and the team's overall record moves to 2-1-1.

The game was a scoreless on in the first half and much of the second. Clair Lehmann had a shot on net early in the game that was saved, and CSB sophomore goalie Kayli Thulin had two saves midway through the first half. Megan Thompson and Roxy Veldman both put shots on net, but neither could score.

McGinty put a shot on net in the first 10 minutes of the second half but that was saved, and first year goalie Paige Kahlmeyer made a save less than a minute later in the first game of her CSB soccer career. Luther had a shot that hit the post at the 62:27 mark, and Kahlmeyer had two more saves, but kept the Norse off the board.

McGinty got Saint Benedict on the board at the 80:42 mark when she took a cross from Thompson in the lower left corner of the box and sent the ball into the back of the net.

That lead was short lived, however. Makayla Firminger had a shot on net at 83:24, but that was saved, and at the 84:14 mark Luther scored its lone goal of the game to tie it 1-1.

Sydney Sherek had a pair of shots on net in the first overtime, but both were saved, and Kahlmeyer had two saves in the second overtime, and the game ended in a tie.

Luther (1-2-1) held a slight edge with 16 shots to CSB's 15, and had nine shots on net to CSB's eight. Sherek and McGinty led the team with two shots on net each. Thulin notched three saves, and Kahlmeyer had five big saves to help preserve the tie.

Saint Benedict returns home Friday, Sept. 13, when it hosts Loras in another big regional matchup at 3 p.m. The team heads to Wisconsin Saturday to wrap up nonconference play with a game against UW-Eau Claire.
