ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team put up shots – and plenty of them – on Macalester Saturday afternoon, but they just wouldn't land where the Bennies needed them to.
CSB had 30 shots – 12 on net – but played the Scots to a 0-0 double overtime tie Saturday in a MIAC contest in St. Joseph. This marks the second scoreless, double overtime tie between the two teams in the last three seasons. Eleven of the last 12 games between the two schools have been scoreless or decided by a single goal, dating back to a double overtime scoreless tie in 2010.
The chances started early for Saint Benedict (5-2-2, 2-0-1) as
Megan Thompson had a shot on net,
Nicole Newman had a shot hit the crossbar and
Roxy Veldman sent a shot high and wide.
Abby Welsch and
Mara Flaherty both had shots that went high midway through the first half, and
Cecelia Miller and
Chloe Miller had shots on net let in the first, but both were saved by Macalester goalie Kayla Togneri.
Chloe Miller had another shot on net early in the second half, and Welsch added a shot on net a few minutes later.
Rebecca Murphy had a low shot on the right side of the net that was saved, and Thompson had a low shot in the center of the net that was also saved.
Maren Noble had a shot in the bottom left corner of the net, but Togneri came out to snag it before it could go into the net, and the game went to overtime.
Thompson had shots on net in each overtime period that could have ended the game, but the Scots' goalie saved both. Late in the second overtime, Thompson sent the ball high into the right corner of the net, but Togneri jumped and got a hand on it to keep the ball out of the net and the game scoreless.
Saint Benedict finished with 30 shots – including 12 on net – in the scoreless draw, while Macalester (0-7-1, 0-2-1) had nine shots, including four on net. Togneri had 12 saves for the Scots and
Kendall Koenen stopped all four shots she faced for Saint Benedict.
CSB is off now until Saturday, Oct. 5, when it heads to Winona to take on Saint Mary's.
