WINONA, Minn. – As a first year last season,
Roxy Veldman had two goals all season. Saturday, she scored two in one game.
Veldman's two goals lifted the College of Saint Benedict to a 2-0 win at Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon in Winona. The win marked the team's sixth of the season, and pushes its overall record to 6-2-2. CSB is also unbeaten in MIAC play thus far in 2019 with a 3-0-1 mark.
Veldman's first goal of the game – and third of the season – came early to set the tone for the game. She took a pass from
Megan Thompson and sent the ball into the back of the net at the 2:44 mark to make it 1-0 early. The assist marked Thompson's fourth of the year and puts her at 26 points in 10 games this season.
Thompson had a shot that went wide and a shot on net around the 12-minute mark but that as saved to keep the score at 1-0.
Abby Welsch and
Mara Flaherty each added shots on net in the first half, but the two teams went into halftime with Saint Benedict up 1-0.
The Cardinals (5-5, 0-5) had an opportunity in the 68
th minute, but first year
Paige Kahlmeyer made the save, and less than two minutes later Veldman scored again – this time unassisted – to make it 2-0. Kahlmeyer made a second save in the 78
th minute, and
Clair Lehmann put a shot on net that was saved late in the game.
Saint Benedict finished with 11 shots to the Cardinals' nine, and held a 6-3 edge in shots on net. Sophomore
Kayli Thulin finished with one save and Kahlmeyer had two as the duo combined for the shutout in net.
CSB is back at home Saturday, Oct. 12, when it hosts Gustavus at 3:30 p.m.
