CSB soccer falls to Auggies in MIAC semis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After outshooting Augsburg when the two teams met in the regular season, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team was hoping to go into Wednesday's MIAC semifinal matchup with that same energy on offense and net a few goals on the Auggies.

This time, however, it was Augsburg's offense that came out hot – and never let up.

CSB answered an early goal by the Auggies, but couldn't keep up as Augsburg netted five goals and the Bennies' season ended with a 5-1 loss in the second round of the MIAC Tournament Wednesday in Minneapolis.

The loss marked the final game in red for the team's 11 seniors, and closes the door on the program's most successful season in five years. Saint Benedict finished the year 11-6-2 overall – the most wins for CSB since 2014 – and picked up its first MIAC Tournament win since 2013. CSB finished fourth in the MIAC standings – its 13th top-five MIAC finish in the last 15 seasons.

Augsburg (14-3-1) scored the first goal of the game at the 5:45 mark Wednesday, but the Bennies were quick to respond. Roxy Veldman netted her seventh goal of the season – and third in the past two games – at the 10:01 mark when she took a pass from Cecelia Miller and sent it past Augsburg's keeper.

From there, however, it was all the Auggies. Right after Veldman scored the Auggies had back-to-back shots on net, and two more shots that were blocked. Megan Thompson went and put a shot on, but Augsburg scored the eventual game-winner at the 23:27 mark of the game. Sydney Sherek put a shot on net that was saved, and Augsburg went into halftime with a 3-1 lead thanks to a goal at the 41:37 mark.

The Auggies' offense was hot coming out of halftime as well as Kendall Koenen made three saves in the first seven minutes of play and two more shots were blocked. The Auggies netted their fourth goal of the game at the 63:37 mark, and made it 5-1 at the 77:32 mark.

Thompson finished with three shots on net to pace Saint Benedict, which had eight total shots, seven of which were on frame. She finished her junior season with 17 goals – a new single-season record for CSB. She finished one point shy of the school record for points in a season with 41. The record is 42, set in 1992. Augsburg had 23 shots, 13 on net. Koenen finished her final game in a CSB uniform with eight saves to bring her season total up to 66.

Augsburg moves on to host St. Thomas in the MIAC Championship game Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. The winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
