ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – It's hard to beat the same team twice in a season, but Saint Benedict is trying to do just that Tuesday afternoon in the MIAC Quarterfinals.
Not only that - CSB is trying to beat the same team twice within a matter of days. After hosting the Knights to end the regular season, the two teams meet again in Round 1 of the MIAC Tournament. The first-round playoff game is set for 2 p.m. in St. Joseph.
No. 6 Bethel and No. 3 St. Kate's meet in the other quarterfinal in St. Paul. St. Thomas awaits the Royals/Wildcats winner, and top-ranked Augsburg is waiting for the winner of the Bennies/Knights matchup.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS
The Knights struggled offensively when the two teams met just three days ago. The team had two shots in the first half - neither on net - and finished the game with five total shots. That marked just the third game all season that Carleton had been held scoreless. Goalie Anna Roethler had a solid game in net, finishing with seven saves to help keep her team in the game. Rainey Tilley leads the team with seven goals and Cate Patterson and Nora Mertz each have five and three assists.
LAST MEETING
CSB and Carleton played just three days ago, on Nov. 2, to wrap up the regular season. Saint Benedict completed its regular season with a second straight shutout to move to fourth in the MIAC standings.
Megan Thompson scored both of the team's goals, and
Kendall Koenen recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Neither team was able to get much offense going in the first half, but Thompson scored early in the second, and then again late to help ice the win.
THE STORYLINE
This marks the third straight season CSB has reached the playoffs, but the team is looking to snap a three-game losing streak in the first round of the MIAC Tournament. CSB hosted a playoff game in 2017 and lost in a shootout, and lost on the road last season in the first round. Saint Benedict also lost in a shootout in the first round in 2014. This marks the Knights' first trip to the conference tournament since 2014.
WHO TO WATCH:
There's a new single-season goals leader in the CSB locker room.
Megan Thompson's two goals Saturday pushed her to 17 for the season, breaking the old record of 16 - set in 1997 and tied in 2003. She had two game-winning goals in a big week of MIAC action for CSB last week. She leads the MIAC in goals and points (38).
Mara Flaherty leads the team with seven assists so far this season, and first year
Clair Lehmann notched the first point of her CSB career Saturday thanks to an assist on Thompson's second goal.
