Emily Quill set the school record on the 1M diving board

Quill sets school record, qualifies for regions

11/02/2019

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Last weekend, first year Emily Quill came points away from a school record, and notched one of two qualifying marks on the one-meter diving board.

Saturday, she surpassed the record by more than 12 points, and officially qualified for regions.

For the third straight week, Quill won the one-meter (six-dive) competition for the College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team. Her win was one of nine for the Bennies Saturday afternoon in a dual against Macalester, and helped the team to a 158-85 victory over the Scots.

Quill's score of 268.20 marked a 12-point personal best, and broke the school record – one that had stood since 1997. The previous record was 264,60, set in 1997 by All-American Katie Macy. The record-setting score also marked Quill's second national qualifying score of the season, ensuring her a spot at the NCAA Central Zone meet in March. This marks the second straight season CSB will have a diver competing in the postseason.

Quill wasn't done there, however. In just her second time competing on the three-meter board, she took second with a score of 225.40 – a 22-point personal best and the fourth-best score in school history. Teammates Artie Pomerenke took second on the one-meter board with a score of 239.25 and Mia Sabin finished third on the three-meter board with a mark of 176.20.

Both Izzy Sonday and Molly Johanson won two events to help CSB to the dual-meet win. Sonday won the 1,000 and 500 freestyle races. She finished the 1,000 in 11:45.46 – a new personal-best time – and the 500 in 5:44.50. Johanson won the 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke. She won the 400 IM in 4:54.53 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.41.

Jessica Milstroh won the 50 free for Saint Benedict in 25.71 seconds, and Mikayla Von Wahlde also picked up a win for CSB. She came in first in the 200 backstroke in 2:12.89. Milstroh also took second in the 200 butterfly in 2:20.62. Milstroh teamed up with Madison Slavik, Ana Birklid and Thea Oman to win the 200 medley relay in 1:55.73, and Von Wahlde was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay squad along with Zoe Allyson, Slavik and Oman. The foursome finished in 1:44.60.

CSB went 1-2-3 in the 500 free with Meghan Kratz taking second (5:50.71) and Skyler Clough third (5:51.75). Saint Benedict also swept the top three spots in the 200 backstroke as Lauren Christiansen took second in 2:15.08 and Birklid third in 2:18.37. Morgan Murphy finished second in the 1,000 free in 12:03.42, and Birklid took second in the 400 IM in 4:59.17. Oman (57.31) and Madi Davis (59.46) took second and third, respectively, in the 100 freestyle.

Davis also took third in the 200 free in 2:10.29, Clough finished third in the 50 free (26.69) and Kayla Albers finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:50.32).
