Thompson scores twice as CSB ends winless streak against Oles

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team's senior class didn't want to graduate without beating St. Olaf at least once, and Megan Thompson helped make that wish come true for her teammates.

Thompson scored twice – including the game-winner with just over two minutes to play in the second overtime – to lift CSB to a 2-1 win over the Oles Sunday in St. Joseph. The win marks CSB's first over St. Olaf since 2014. The Oles have edged CSB by a one-goal margin each of the last four seasons, and on Sunday the Bennies returned the favor.

It was the Oles (7-5-2, 4-3-1) who took a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the first half when they scored off a header on a corner kick at the 20:42 mark. Cecelia Miller almost had the equalizer less than a minute later when the goalie came out and she sent a shot towards the net, but an Ole defender stepped in just in time to stop the ball and kick it out of bounds. Meghan Verkinderen and Grace Johnson both had shots on net , and Clair Lehmann had a shot on net in the final two minutes of the first half, but the Oles went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

Saint Benedict had the chance to tie the game early in the second half when a cross went into the box with Lehmann in pursuit, but CSB was called offsides. Thompson evened the score a shot time later, however, when she took a long pass from Mara Flaherty, drew the Oles' keeper out of the net and sent the ball behind the keeper into the low left side of the net to tie the game at the 60:26 mark.

Maren Noble had a rocket of a shot that the Oles' keeper barely tipped up and out in the 79th minute, and Thompson had a solid shot in the final minute of regulation, but the game headed to overtime tied 1-1.

There was a skirmish in front of the St. Olaf net two miuntes into the first overtime. Madelyn Curtis got a shot on, Thompson got the rebound and put a shot on, and Noble got another rebound, but that shot went wide left. Roxy Veldman had a shot on net late in the first OT, but the Oles' keeper just got a hand on the ball and sent it wide to the right to keep the game tied.

Flaherty and Lehmann both put shots on net four minutes into the second overtime, and Noble got the rebound and sent a shot in that hit the crossbar. Curtis put another shot on, and Sydney Sherek appeared to have ended the game at the 107 mark, but CSB was called offsides again and the goal was waved off. Less than a minute later, however, Thompson ended the game anyway. The Oles kicked the ball back towards their keeper, but Thompson rushed in, intercepted the pass and sent it past Brynne Davis and into the net as Davis dove to try and snag the ball.

Thompson now has a MIAC-leading 14 goals on the season, including six game-winning goals. Fourteen is the most goals for a CSB soccer player since 2003 when Megan McVoy had 15 goals. Thompson is two goals shy of tying the school record for goals in a season.

Saint Benedict outshot St. Olaf 21-15 Sunday, including 14-6 in shots on net. Kendall Koenen finished with five saves and Davis had 12 for the Oles.

CSB is now 8-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 and tied for fourth in the MIAC. The team travels to St. Paul Wednesday, Oct. 23, to take on St. Thomas in a game that could push one of the teams into a tie for first with Augsburg. Both the Bennies and Tommies have 16 points in the MIAC standings heading into Wednesday's game.
