ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team is coming off a 2-0 shutout win against Saint Mary's, and returns home to host Gustavus Adolphus. CSB hopes to continue to improve its promising 3-0-1 record in conference play. The Gusties come to town Saturday, Oct. 12, for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC contest.
About the Gusties
Gustavus is looking to turn its season around and improve its success rate in conference play. The Gusties' overall record this season is 2-8 and they are 1-4 in MIAC play. Of the team's eight losses, however, five are by a single goal, and one came in overtime. Ashley Becker, the Gusties' goalkeeper, is having a solid year, she has a .747 save percentage with 59 saves. Katie Ashpole is also a big factor for the Gustavus team; she has four goals this year, nine total points, and 20 shots.
Last Meeting
CSB and Gustavus are 13-11-3 against each other all time. Last year, the two teams played late in the season and CSB won in a close 3-2 game.
Megan Thompson had a hat trick for the Bennies, including the game-winner in the 65
th minute to help the team to the win. The teams had pretty similar stats during the game with Gustavus holding a 16-15 edge in total shots and CSB a 7-5 edge in shots on net. This win helped to give CSB momentum going into MIAC tournament play.
The Storyline
CSB has had a lot of success so far this season, especially at home where the team is 4-0-1. Gustavus, on the other hand, is looking to move up in the MIAC standings. Both teams will have the potential of playing in snow this weekend as the forecast is calling for cold temperatures and potentially accumulating flurries. Saint Benedict is unbeaten in its last four games, and hopes to keep that streak alive as the end of the regular season draws near.
Who to Watch
Megan Thompson is currently second in the conference with 11 goals, 49 shots and 26 points.
Roxy Veldman has also helped to get CSB on the board this season with four goals and three assists, including the first multi-goal game of her career against Saint Mary's. The CSB goal keepers are looking solid, as
Kendall Koenen has a .718 save percentage and
Paige Kahlmeyer has a .889 save percentage.
