ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a minor setback Tuesday evening, the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team bounced back Friday with a sweep of Saint Mary's to wrap up a short week.
The win – which saw set scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-23 – pushed CSB's overall record to 14-5 and helped keep the team perfect in MIAC play with a 4-0 conference mark. This marks the first time since 2015 that Saint Benedict has won four straight MIAC games to start the season. That year, the team went 5-0 in MIAC play before picking up its first conference loss.
The Cardinals (8-7, 1-3) hung with CSB early in each set, but Saint Benedict used short runs to put SMU away. In the first set, Saint Mary's led 10-8 before CSB went on a 7-0 run that included a trio of kills from
Hunter Weiss to make it 15-10.
Madison Weiss and Hunter had a block to make it 24-17, and the set ended on a big block from Madison and
Claire Westby.
Saint Benedict took advantage of four SMU attack errors, a kill from Hunter and
Madison Weiss and a block by the Weiss duo to take a 19-8 lead, and a kill from
Madison Weiss ended the set in CSB's favor. After taking an early 2-0 lead in the third and final set, Saint Mary's never led again, but was never out of the game. CSB led 20-14 thanks to a pair of kills from
Madison Weiss, but the Cardinals went on a 6-2 run to make it 22-20, then got within 23-22 and 24-23 before a kill from
Liz Schultz ended the match.
The Weiss twins each finished with 11 kills to lead CSB and Schultz finished with 10.
Madison Weiss also had five block assists and Hunter added three.
Katie Koch had 35 assists, and
Haley LaValle led the defense with 21 digs. Schultz added 11 digs.
Linnaea Wallis paced SMU with nine kills and Brandi Blattner finished with eight – including the 1,000
th of her career. Lillian Braun had 34 assists and 14 digs.
CSB gets the weekend off now after four straight weekends of tournament play. The team returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it hosts Carleton at 7 p.m.
