CSB falls to Augsburg on the road

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team led by nine points after the first quarter, but Augsburg chipped away at the lead and defeated CSB 64-55 Wednesday night in a MIAC contest in Minneapolis, Minn.
 
With three games left in the regular season, CSB is 13-9 overall and 9-6 and alone in fourth in the MIAC. Saint Benedict is one game ahead of St. Kate's, which is 7-8 in the league, and two ahead of Saint Mary's, which is 7-8.
 
After outscoring the Auggies (13-9, 6-9) in the first quarter, including a 7-0 run to end the quarter, CSB gave up 23 second-quarter points, but still maintained a 33-29 lead at halftime. Saint Benedict led by as many as 11 early in the second thanks to a three by Alison Newton before the Auggies went on a 10-4 run to get within five and eventually tie the game at 29-29. Chelsey Guetter scored and Newton hit a pair of free throws to give CSB its four-point halftime lead.
 
Augsburg held Saint Benedict to just seven points in the third quarter to take a 45-40 lead into the fourth and final quarter. Sidney Schiffler hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the quarter to make it a five-point game.
 
The Auggies pushed their lead to nine early in the fourth, and CSB was never able to get closer than six points. Niki Fokken hit a pair of free throws to make it 50-44 with 6:50 left to play, and Schiffler scored on a layup to get the gap to 52-46 midway through the quarter, but the Auggies held on for the win.
 
Guetter finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead CSB, which shot 33.3 percent from the field. Newton and Schiffler both added eight points and Alex Johnson had nine rebounds. CSB went 15-for-17 from the line and had 45 rebounds and 26 turnovers.
 
Camryn Speese led all scorers with 16 points for Augsburg, which shot 35.6 percent from the field. She was one of three players in double digits for the Auggies, who went 16-for-21 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 16 turnovers.
 
Saint Benedict is back at home Saturday, Feb. 11, when it hosts Gustavus at 3 p.m. in its final home game of the regular season.
