CSB hot from field in win over Oles

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a low-scoring loss to St. Thomas Saturday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team bounced back with a big win against St. Olaf Wednesday night.
 
CSB shot 50 percent from the field and scored 72 points en route to a 72-53 win over the Oles in Claire Lynch Hall. The win is the 10th home victory of the season for CSB, which is 13-7 overall and 9-4 and in fourth in the MIAC.
 
Saint Benedict – which finished the game with a season-high 12 3-pointers – used threes from Annie Dittberner, Sidney Schiffler and Chelsey Guetter to go up 13-3 early on the Oles. St. Olaf hit three 3-pointers of its own to make it 15-9, but CSB went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter with a 25-11 lead.
 
St. Olaf got hot in the second quarter and hit six 3-pointers of its own. The Oles got the lead down to six, 41-33, with 42 seconds left in the half, but Niki Fokken scored to push CSB's lead to eight, 41-33, at halftime.
 
While the Oles hit all nine of their threes in the first half, CSB hit six in the first half and six in the second, and Dittberner hit a three to start the scoring in the third quarter and push the lead to 11. She hit another a short time later to make it a 16-point game before the Oles went on a short run and cut the gap to 11, 51-40, with 2:43 left in the third.
 
Neither team scored again until Guetter hit a free throw in the final seconds of the third to make it a 12-point game, 52-40, heading into the final quarter. Schiffler hit another three early in the fourth quarter, Alison Newton added a three and Megan Schroeder later hit a three to make it a 20-point game for the first time at 70-50.
 
Dittberner scored 13 points and Schiffler added a career-high 12 for CSB, which went 12-for-23 from long range. Guetter had nine points and seven rebounds and Newton had seven points and seven assists. Along with shooting 50 percent from the field – the second-highest mark this season for CSB – Saint Benedict went 12-for-17 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 18 turnovers.
 
Margaret Anderson and Makenna Ash each had 11 points for St. Olaf and Ash and Betsey Daly had eight rebounds. The Oles shot 38 percent from the field, including 9-for-19 from long range. They went 6-for-14 from the line and had 30 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
 
CSB is back on the road Saturday, Feb. 4, when it takes on Bethel – which is currently third in the MIAC – in Arden Hills. CSB has just one more regular-season home game on the schedule for Feb. 11 against Gustavus.
