CSB falls to Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team headed to St. Peter, Minn., looking to end Gustavus' 12-game winning streak, but the Gusties had other thoughts.

Gustavus went on a 9-3 run to start the game and came away with a 71-50 win over Saint Benedict Saturday afternoon to stay undefeated both overall and in MIAC play. The loss was just the second conference loss of the year for CSB, which is now 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.

After the Gusties (13-0, 6-0) jumped to a 9-3 lead, a jumper by Niki Fokken and later a layup by Morgan Merritt cut the gap to three, but Gustavus ended the first quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 21-13 lead. CSB scored just seven points in the second quarter and the Gusties pushed their lead to 13, 33-20, at halftime.

Baskets by Alison Newton and Macy Kelly made it an 11-point game early in the third quarter, and later Chelsey Guetter and Kelly both scored to cut the gap to eight, 44-36, but a three-pointer later in the quarter made it a 12-point game again, 51-39, heading into the fourth. Gustavus pushed its lead to 20 early in the fourth and then held on for the win.

Fokken finished with 13 points to lead CSB, which shot 42.6 percent from the field. Newton finished with nine points and Guetter had five rebounds. CSB went 7-for-12 from the free-throw line and had 16 turnovers.

Miranda Rice led all scorers with 30 points for Gustavus, which shot just over 47 percent from the field and outrebounded CSB 39-20. Kelsey Carpenter (14) and Mikayla Miller (10) also scored in double digits, and Rice also had nine rebounds. The Gusties went 15-for-17 from the line and had 17 turnovers.

CSB, which is 1-5 on the road this season, is at Macalester Wednesday, Jan. 11, in St. Paul. CSB returns home Saturday, Jan. 14, when it hosts Saint Mary's.
