ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four players scored in double digits to help the College of Saint Benedict basketball team pick up just its second road win of the year and beat Macalester 75-51 Wednesday night in St. Paul, Minn.
Heading into Wednesday's game, CSB was 1-5 on the road, and hadn't won a game outside Claire Lynch since its season opener on Nov. 15. Saint Benedict (9-5, 5-2) scored 20 or more points in three quarters Wednesday, including 22 in the second, to move into a three-way tie for third in the MIAC.
Seven games in to the conference season, both Gustavus and St. Thomas are undefeated at 7-0, and Bethel, CSB and Saint Mary's are 5-2.
CSB jumped to a 10-3 lead early Wednesday, but Macalester (8-6, 2-5) gave up just three points in the final 6:26 of the first quarter and took a 14-13 lead after one. Saint Benedict, however, went on a 19-2 run to open the second quarter, and a 3-pointer by
Macy Kelly put CSB up 32-16 with 2:18 left in the second. The Scots got within 10, but
Chelsey Guetter hit a three with a minute left in the half to make it 35-22 heading into the locker rooms.
A three by
Annie Dittberner early in the third made it a 19-point game, and a layup by Guetter put CSB up 20, 47-27, for the first time. A three by
Alison Newton later made it a 21-point game, but Macalester got within 16, 55-39, heading into the final quarter. Newton scored a pair of baskets to start the fourth quarter, and CSB's lead hovered near 20 throughout the remainder of the game.
Newton finished with 16 points to lead CSB, which shot just over 41 percent from the field, and
Macy Kelly added 11. Guetter finished with 10 points and
Niki Fokken had 10 points and six rebounds. CSB hit seven 3-pointers, went 16-for-31 from the line and outrebounded the Scots 45-37. CSB had 12 turnovers.
Lauren Clamage led Macalester with 14 points and Park Masterson had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Scots, who shot 33.3 percent from the field, went 13-for-21 from the line and had 21 turnovers.
