CSB snaps skid, beats Concordia to start 2017

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Four players scored in double digits for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team Wednesday night to help CSB snap a four-game losing streak and defeat Concordia 66-48 to start the 2017 portion of its schedule.
 
The win also keeps Saint Benedict, which is now 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC, undefeated at home so far this season. CSB is 7-0 in Claire Lynch Hall as it heads into the main portion of its conference schedule.
 
CSB's biggest lead of the first quarter was six points, including 16-10 with 2:37 left, but Concordia (4-8, 1-4) scored to make it a four-point game, 16-12, after one quarter. The Cobbers made it a two-point game, 21-19, with 4:51 left in the second quarter, but from there CSB went on a 14-0 run to end the quarter and take a 35-19 lead into halftime. Chelsey Guetter hit a three, scored on a layup and then converted a three point play to start the run, and Macy Kelly and Alison Newton both scored as well.
 
The Cobbers cut into CSB's lead early in the third, but Guetter hit another three to spark a 10-0 CSB run to put Saint Benedict up 22, 47-25, with just under five minutes left in the quarter. CSB maintained nearly a 20-point lead throughout the third quarter, and Concordia got within 11 in the final quarter, but CSB outscored the Cobbers 9-2 in the final 3:15 of the game to seal the win.
 
Guetter finished with 16 points to lead CSB, which shot just over 41 percent from the field. Newton added 13 points, Annie Dittberner 12 and Kelly added 11. Guetter also had eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Saint Benedict went 12-for-19 from the line and had 37 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
 
Jenna Januschka led Concordia with 18 points and Greta Walsh added 11. The Cobbers shot 39.5 percent from the field and had 27 rebounds and 17 turnovers.
 
CSB is back on the road for a pair of games starting Saturday, Jan. 7, when it travels to Saint Peter, Minn., to take on undefeated Gustavus. Saint Benedict is at Macalester Wednesday, Jan. 11, and is back at home Saturday, Jan. 14, when it hosts Saint Mary's.
