ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a dominating win in the first set against Saint Mary's Friday night, it looked as though the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team was well on its way to its third MIAC win of the season.
The Cardinals, however, had other ideas.
After CSB won the opening set 25-9, Saint Mary's came back to win the next three 25-21, 25-19 and 26-24 to win the match 3-1. Saint Benedict is now 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC.
Friday night also served as a retirement ceremony for "Announcer" Bob Imholte, who served as the voice of CSB volleyball for 27 years. Imholte was honored between the second and third sets, and there was a small ceremony in O'Connells following the match.
CSB dominated the first set, hitting .348 and holding the Cardinals to a negative hitting percentage.
Briana Schmiesing had three kills and
Liz Schultz and
Cami Hoover each had two in the first set alone.
Saint Benedict took a 4-1 lead early in the second set, but SMU stayed close and tied the game at 10-10. Kills from Hoover, Schmiesing and Schultz put CSB up 15-12 midway through the set, but the Cardinals tied the match again at 16-16, and took their first lead 18-17 on a service ace. A kill by
Ashley Trustheim gave CSB a 20-19 lead, but that was CSB's last lead of the match as SMU went on a 6-1 run to end the set.
The third match was close to start, and CSB took an 11-10 lead on a Cardinal service error, but SMU answered with five straight points to go up 15-11, and CSB was never able to catch up.
CSB maintained a slim lead throughout much of the fourth set, and extended its lead to five on kills by Hoover at both 20-15 and again at 21-16. SMU went on a 6-1 run to tie the score at 22-22. A SMU ball handling error put CSB up, and Schultz and Schmiesing got a big block to go up 24-22, but Saint Mary's tied the game at 24-24 then used a pair of kills to win the match.
Hoover finished with a team-high 13 kills for CSB and Schmiesing added 10.
Megan Pekarek had 31 assists and 10 digs and
Melissa Koop led the team with 15 digs.
Haley LaValle added 14 digs and
Liz Waugh finished with 10.
CSB returns to action at home when it hosts St. Olaf at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.
