ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Friday night against Saint Mary's, the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team won the first set of the match but lost the next three. Saturday, CSB reversed that.
Saint Benedict dropped the first set of the day 25-16 to St. Olaf, but came back to win the next three sets in convincing fashion for a 3-1 win in Claire Lynch Hall. The win pushed CSB back to .500 overall at 8-8 and improved its MIAC record to 3-2.
The Oles (7-11, 0-5) went on a 4-1 run to start the first set and were able to keep pushing their lead. They led by as many as seven late before pulling away for the win. The second set, however, it was all CSB from the get-go.
Emily Christian scored seven straight points for CSB, which went on an 8-2 run to start the match. Saint Benedict pushed its lead to 19-4 and 22-5 before pulling out the win.
The third set was closer, but kills from
Cami Hoover,
Megan Pekarek and
Lauren Mathews made it 11-6 early. The Oles tied the game at 11-11, and took a 13-11 lead on a pair of kills, but kills from Hoover and
Ashley Trustheim eventually made it 21-18, and St. Olaf wasn't able to get any closer.
CSB jumped to another lead early in the fourth set, 9-4, and later pushed that lead to 19-11. St. Olaf went on a 6-0 run to cut the gap to two, 19-17, but a kill from
Liz Schultz and Ole attack error gave CSB a four-point cushion. The Oles made it a one-point game, 22-21, but
Briana Schmiesing had a pair of kills and
Haley LaValle ended the match with a service ace.
Trustheim finished with 12 kills to pace CSB, which had 47 total kills, and Hoover added 11. Pekarek had 41 assists, and LaValle led the team with 14 digs.
Emily Christian (11) and
Meghan Koop (10) also hit double-digit digs. CSB also finished the game with 18 total blocks, including five from Mathews and four from Schultz. Koop also had three service aces.
CSB is off now until Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, when it heads to St. Paul for a pair of matches. CSB takes on No. 22 Northwestern Friday and gets back into MIAC play Saturday at St. Kate's.
