ST. JOSEPH, Minn. –
Niki Fokken and her College of Saint Benedict teammates were on fire Saturday afternoon.
Fokken missed just two shots all afternoon and the CSB basketball team shot nearly 57 percent from the field en route to an 88-52 win over Carleton. The win pushed CSB's overall record to 6-0 and keeps its early season hot streak alive. Saint Benedict is also 2-0 in the MIAC and is enjoying its best start since the 2003-04 season.
After a close start to the game,
Morgan Merritt hit back-to-back threes to give CSB a boost to end the first quarter up 22-16. Carleton (1-4, 0-2) made it a one-point game early in the second, but CSB went 5-for-6 from the line and got baskets from
Chelsey Guetter, Fokken and
Alex Johnson to spark a 16-0 run to end the quarter and head into halftime up 43-25.
Fokken scored three straight baskets to start the second half and push the lead to 20, 49-29, and CSB never looked back. Saint Benedict led 64-46 after the third quarter, and took a 30-point lead, 76-46, with 7:05 left to play on a three-point play by Fokken and a layup by Guetter.
Fokken led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the field and a 5-for-5 night from the line. All but two players scored for CSB Saturday, and Guetter finished with a career-high 18 points, Merritt 12 and Johnson added nine points and nine rebounds. CSB went 25-for-36 from the line and had 16 rebounds and just seven turnovers.
