Soccer Hosts St. Olaf in Regular Season Finale

10/31/2015

The College of Saint Benedict rounds out its regular season tomorrow (Oct. 31st) with a home game against St. Olaf's College. A Blazer win and a Concordia victory over St. Kate's on the same day would send the Blazers to the MIAC playoffs. MIAC Standings

The Schedule:

Saint Benedict vs. St. Olaf, 3:30 p.m., Saturday, October 31st, CSB Soccer Field, St. Joseph, Minn.

The Record:

CSB: 7-7-2 (5-5 MIAC)

SOC: 3-10-4 (2-7-1 MIAC)

Who to Watch:

CSB:

Sr. F Aly Hoffman | Scored one goal and assisted two others in last year's victory over St. Olaf

Jr. K Heather Kaluzniak | Ranks fifth in the MIAC with a 1.02 goals against average

Jr. D Jessica Trossen | Hard nosed defender has seen her minutes increase to 83.25 mins per game over the past four games (was averaging 56 per game over the previous 12)

SOC:

Sr. F Madison Van Wyeln | Fifth in the MIAC with seven goals scored

Sr. K Ruth Hesse | Has played 1542 minutes this season (25.7 hours) and has held opponents to 1.40 goals per game

Sr. F Kajsa Brindley | Two-time All-MIAC forward is due to score, with just one goal so far this year

About the Oles:

St. Olaf comes into this game sliding on a six-game losing streak. Their weakness has been an offense that has struggled to score at time. They are averaging a conference-worst 0.9 goals per game, the only MIAC team to average less than one goal per game. Outside of Van Wyeln, only one player has scored multiple goals this season (Lauren Martin -- 2)

Storyline:

At the end of the day, the Blazers will know if their season is over or if they've earned the opportunity to play on in the MIAC playoffs. The path to the playoffs starts with a Blazer win against the Oles. Saint Benedict also will need Concordia to beat St. Catherine to pass St. Catherine for the final MIAC playoff spot. Key to victory will be getting the Blazer offense firing early.

Last Time Out:

On Wednesday, the Blazers traveled to Saint Paul to take on the Macalester Scots. The first half was scoreless, although junior forward Taylor Hedin nearly gave the Blazers a lead with a shot on net in the 29th minute. Just two minutes into the second half, Scot midfielder Lydia Chodosh scored from 15 yards out to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, and the Scots emerged with the 1-0 victory.
