Volleyball sweeps No. 24 Augsburg

By Alex Wald

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- The Saint Benedict volleyball team (10-5, 2-0 MIAC) won its second match this year over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 24 Augsburg 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 27-25). The win improves the Blazers to 2-0 in the MIAC and 42-5 all-time against the Auggies.

The Blazers dominated the first set, defeating the Auggies 25-10. After giving up the first two points, the Blazers went on an 11-point run to gain an 11-2 lead.

The Auggies came clawing back in the second set, claiming an early 8-4 lead and extending it to a 19-17 lead late in the set. Led by several impressive assists from setter Taya Kockelman, the Blazers went on an 8-4 run to win the set 25-23. Junior outside hitter Laura Schmitt had three consecutive kills to win the set.

The third set was close the entire way, with neither team leading by more than two throughout the entire set. With the Blazers down 24-22 late in the set, the Auggies had a chance to win the third set and force a fourth. In perhaps the most intense point the Blazers have played all year, the two sides traded attack after attack after attack, with neither side able to find a seam in the others' defense. At multiple points in the volley, it looked like the Auggies would win the set until Nass came up with a diving one-arm save to keep the Blazers alive. The Blazers eventually won the point when junior middle Mary Franz blocked an attack by Auggie outside hitter Colleen Ourada to win the point.

Several Franz-blocks later, Kockelman was serving for match point (26-25 Blazer lead). She promptly aced the serve and Claire Lynch Hall erupted in euphoria as the Blazers completed the sweep of the nationally ranked Auggies.

Kockelman finished with 44 assists and 11 digs for CSB, which had 104 digs as a team. Schmitt led the way with 14 kills, Lexi Rinde added three and Bailey Rykken chipped in with 11. Nass paced the defense with 31 digs, Schmitt finished with 20, Gabi Narvaez had 15 and Kelly Davenport added 13.

Blazer volleyball returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 27, when they will head to Saint Catherine to take on the Wildcats (9-8, 0-1 MIAC). First serve is set for 3 p.m.
