ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After four road games to start the season – including a plane trip to Washington – the College of Saint Benedict soccer team finally gets to play at home; kind of. The Blazers host a pair of nonconference games this Saturday and Sunday, including Saturday's game against Wartburg College. Game time is 12:30 p.m. on the Saint John's practice field in Collegeville, Minn. The Blazers are 3-1 overall, are receiving votes in the latest poll and moved up to No. 3 in the North Region Rankings.
About the Knights: Wartburg enters today's match on a two-game winning streak. The Knights started the season with an overtime loss to Macalester, which is receiving votes in the NSCAA poll, and played a scoreless match with UW-La Crosse. Wartburg beat UW-Stevens Point 4-0 and Augsburg 4-1, both at home, for its first two wins of the season. Brittany Frush was named the IIAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals in the Knights' two wins. She leads teh team with four goals and eight total points.
Last Year: The two teams met in an early season game in 2013 in Waverly, Iowa. It was the Blazers who came out on top, 4-1, in an early upset against the Knights, who were ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Division III at the time.
Heather Kaluzniak made seven saves for CSB and four players had one goal each for the Blazers in the nonconference victory. The loss was the first of the year for Wartburg, which finished 8-11-1 overall in 2013. The win was the second in what eventually ended up being a seven-game streak for the Blazers, who started the year 7-0-1.
The Storyline: Can the Blazers extend their three-match winning streak, and open the home season with a win. After a 1-0 loss to start the season, Saint Ben's has won three straight, all by shutout. The Blazers have beat opponents 1-0, 3-0 and 2-0, and a pair of wins this weekend would allow them to start MIAC play on a five-game winning streak. A win Saturday would also give Saint Ben's momentum heading into Sunday's match against Loras College - a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Division III tournament game that ended the Blazers' season.
Who to Watch:
Heather Kaluzniak has been solid in goal for the Blazers so far this season, and enters Saturday's game with a perfect save percentage and a 0.00 goals against average. She has 14 saves, which is fourth in the MIAC. Junior
