ST. PETER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team held onto its spot in third place in the MIAC with a 3-1 win over Gustavus Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.
The Blazers improved to 18-8 overall and 7-2 in the conference with the victory. CSB is behind first-place Augsburg (8-1) and second-place St. Thomas (7-1) in the league standings. Bethel is right behind the Blazers with a 6-3 conference mark.
Saint Benedict won the first set 25-18 Saturday afternoon, but the Gusties (11-12, 5-4) came back to win the second set 25-20 and tie the amtch at 1-1. The Blazers, however, won set three 25-17 and completed the victory with a 25-16 win in set four.
Laura Schmitt finished with a match-high 16 kills for CSB, which had 56 total kills.
Sophie Stangl and
Lexi Rinde each added 10 kills.
Taya Kockelman had 45 assists and six digs, and Schmitt led the defense with 16 digs.
Victoria Nass also had 14 digs.
Alyssa Taylor paced Gustavus with 15 kills and Janessa Jahnke finished with 11. Marisa Morgan had 39 assists and Kendra Weege led the Gusties' defense with 14 digs.
Saint Benedict has two more games remaining in the regular season. The Blazers host Hamline at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, for senior night. CSB is on the road for its final regular-season game against Concordia on Saturday, Nov. 1.
