St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team held and exhibition game with the University of Minnesota Club Team on Sept. 13, providing one final opportunity to work out against an opponent, before the MIAC schedule picks up in just a few days.
Â
Head coach
Steve Kimble rolled through his line-up on Friday afternoon, at one point playing with first-years at all 11 spots.
Â
After a scoreless first half, the two teams traded second half goals before finishing the friendly in a 1-1 tie.
Â
With 16:28 left in the match, the Blazers evened the score with a goal from rookie Taylor Hedin (Andover, Minn.), who tapped the ball into the corner, after a beautiful serve across the entire right half of the field from
Aly Hoffman (Chaska, Minn.).
Â
"It was pretty nice to get my first goal of the season as a freshman, and it was really fun," Hedin said.
Â
Hedin pulled the Blazers back to even after the U of M went up 1-0, 20 minutes earlier when Lauren Zinc scored unassisted off a bouncing loose ball from goalkeeper Heather Kaluzniak's (Plymouth, Minn.) left side.
Â
Hedin then nearly won the game for the Blazers in the final minute, but her shot was just high going off the cross bar.
Â
The Blazers will return to real action on Sunday, hosting UW-Stout in the home opener at 1 p.m. Then on Tuesday at 4 p.m., they stay home to host Hamline in the MIAC opener.Â
