Saturday Soccer Showdown: The second-place Saint Benedict (9-2-1, 5-2-0 MIAC) soccer team will play in its first game since losing at St. Thomas on Tuesday. The loss was the team's second of the year and only the third time this year they have ceded multiple goals in a game. The Blazers host the fifth-place Augsburg Auggies (8-2-4, 4-2-1 MIAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
About the Auggies: The Auggies, once nationally ranked at No. 25 in the country, are closing out a three-game road trip in which they have gone 0-2-1. They have been outscored by a 6-2 margin over that span. After beginning the season picked to finish sixth in the MIAC preseason polls, the Auggies were the surprise team of the early season, eventually working their way into the national rankings. They are led by junior forward Olivia Muyres who has already set school records in goals (15) and is one point shy of a school record (37). She currently leads the MIAC in goals and points and sits second in assists.
Â
Last Year: In 2012 the Blazers travelled to Minneapolis and dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to the Auggies. Then-first-year Marie Fitzgerald scored the game-winner with just five minutes to play in the second overtime, scoring off a pass from then-sophomore midfielder Molly Allen. The Blazers got a goal from
Laura Kosch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) who redirected a pass from
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) past the sliding Auggie goalkeeper. Unfortunately the one goal wasn't enough the Blazers lost the game 2-1.
Â
The Storyline: Can the Blazers respond from a disappointing loss on Tuesday against a good Augsburg team today? The Auggies are the only MIAC team besides the Blazers that have been ranked nationally this year. The game will feature the conference's two top offenses. The Auggies average a conference-leading 2.6 goal per game, but the Blazers are not so far behind with a 2.5 average. The Auggies are ceding 0.87 goals per game, while the Blazers are giving up 0.72 per contest.
Â
Who to Watch: Senior forward
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) continues to lead the MIAC in assists (eight), and leads the Blazers with 20 points. Sophomore forwards Grace Vaughan (Shakopee, Minn.) and
Aly Hoffman (Chaska, Minn) have been consistent up front with seven and six goals this year, respectively. Look for the treacherous trio of Bouchard, Hoffman, and Vaughan to work each other around up front often and early to try to get an early lead against the tough Augsburg defenders. First-year keeper Heather Kaluzniak (Plymouth, Minn.) continues to be a pleasant addition in net for the Blazers, leading the conference with a 0.878 save percentage. Her 0.79 goals against average is the second-best mark in the conference.
Â
Last Time Out: On Tuesday the Blazers traveled to St. Paul and dropped their second game of the season by a 2-1 score at the hands of St. Thomas. The Tommies scored once in the first half and once early in the second, building a two-goal lead with 25 minutes to play. As the Blazers attempted to crawl back they got an 85th minute goal off a free kick from Bouchard. The comeback proved to be too little too late however, and the Blazers came out of the game with a loss.
