Blazer Volleyball Shocks UW-Eau Claire in Three Sets

A 3-0 victory isn't typically common between two nationally ranked teams, but the #25-ranked College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (4-3 overall, 0-0 MIAC) handed the #13-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (7-1 overall) its first loss of the season tonight.

The Blazers started the first set off tight as both teams exchanged points with four ties on the scoreboard before the score was tied at ten.  The Blazers then jumped a 9-3 run, extending their leadt o 19-13.  The Blugolds  began to catch up, bringing the score within two at 22-20, but CSB held them off, winning 25-20.

The rhythm of the second set much like the first, with another tied score at ten.  CSB pulled away from UW-Eau Claire with a score of 20-14, and though the Blugolds closed the margin, the Blazers clenched another win at 25-21.

The final set was nearly a mirror image of the first two as the crowd saw tied scoreboard at ten.  Soon enough, the Blazers jumped a 19-16 lead and held off the Blugolds until the end, winning 25-19.

Junior middle hitter Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) led the Blazers with 13 kills, while junior right side hitter Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart) added eight.  Senior setter Beth Hanson (Faribault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) had 33 assists and senior outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) added 20 digs.

CSB, now 2-0 in the Augsburg tournament, faced Macalester tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
