ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – All season long, Sophie Stangl has been a consistent option for the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team in the middle.

The senior from Buffalo, Minn., can always be counted on for a big kill or a block to help her team.

This past weekend, Stangl stepped up and led the Blazer hitters in back-to-back games to help Saint Benedict finish the regular season with a pair of MIAC wins. For her play this past week, Stangl has been named the Blazer Athlete of the Week.

Stangl started the week with a team-high 10 kills and one block in a 3-0 sweep of Hamline Wednesday night. The sweep put an exclamation point on Senior Night, which was also Saint Benedict’s final home game of the regular season.

Saturday, Stangl had an even bigger game. She finished the night with 15 kills and three blocks to lead the Blazers to a 3-1 victory over Concordia to end the regular season. The pair of wins helped the Blazers finish alone in third and earn the No. 3 seed in the MIAC Postseason Tournament.

Stangl has put up solid stats all year for the Blazers from her middle blocker position. She is third on the team in total kills (231) and kills per set (2.46) and she is also second on the team with 48 total blocks, including 10 solo blocks. She is 16th in the MIAC in total kills after the completion of the regular season.

Stangl and the Blazers open the postseason Tuesday, Nov. 4, when they host No. 6 Gustavus Adolphus at 7 p.m. in Claire Lynch. Stangl and her six fellow seniors are hoping for their fourth straight bid to the NCAA National Tournament.

Admission to the MIAC Quarterfinal game is $7 for adults and $3 for students. The first 50 students get in free thanks to the CSB Senate. For those who can’t make it to Claire Lynch, the game will be streamed live at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/csbblazers
