ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team picked up a pair of big wins this past weekend, and senior Mollie Wise played a big role in each of those wins.
Wise scored five goals in two games to help the hockey team reach its highest win total in nearly two decades in the team’s MIAC series with St. Olaf. For her big weekend, Wise is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Heading into the weekend, Wise had five goals to her name in 2019-20. She notched the first hat trick of her career Friday to bring her season total up to eight goals, and two more goals Saturday puts her at a career-high 11 goals in a single season. Her previous career high was eight goals in 2016-17 as a first year. Her 11 goals are also the most for a CSB hockey player since Elli Marvin in 2016-17, and puts her tied for fourth in the MIAC.
Wise scored the game-winning goal both days for Saint Benedict against the Oles. In Friday’s 5-1 win, she scored on the power play in the first period, then added a goal in the first two minutes of the second period, and one more with less than two minutes to play in the game to complete the hat trick.
Saturday, Wise started the scoring once again with a goal midway through the first period, and her fifth goal of the weekend came with just over 30 seconds left to play. She also finished the weekend with 19 total shots on net – including 10 in Saturday’s 4-0 victory.
Thanks to Wise’s high-scoring weekend, CSB picked up its first sweep of a MIAC opponent since 2015-16. The pair of wins pushed the team’s record to 9-8-1, marking the most wins for the Bennies since 2001-02.
Wise and her teammates look to use the momentum from the MIAC sweep when the team takes on St. Thomas this weekend. The Tommies head into the weekend 11-4-3 overall and in second in the conference.
