ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Saturday afternoon in the first round of the D3 Classic, two members of the College of Saint Benedict golf team shot season-best rounds.
Sunday, not only did a handful of CSB golfers shoot career- or season-low rounds, they combined to set a school record.
The fivesome of Nikki Frederickson, Emily Olson, Liz Schwartz, Bridget Amundson and Grace Hillemeier combined to shoot a school-record 305 in the second round of the D3 Classic at Emerald Greens in Hastings. For their big performance, the CSB golf team is this week’s CSB Team of the Week.
In Saturday’s first round, Frederickson and Olson both shot season-low 18-hole scores and were in the top 13 – Frederickson with a 77 and Olson with a 79.
As Sunday’s second round progressed, it became clear that the team was on the verge of something special. When all was said and done, four of the team’s top five landed in the top 25, four shot 78 or better, two golfers shot season-low scores and one finished with a career-best 18-hole score.
Frederickson and Olson paced Saint Benedict, finishing in 11
th with 155s. After shooting a season-low Saturday, Frederickson shot a 78 Sunday. Olson followed up her season-low 79 with another season-low score Sunday, this time a 76.
Schwartz – a senior – had the best round of her collegiate career Sunday morning. After carding an 84 Saturday, she shaved eight strokes off that score Sunday for a career-best 18-hole score of 76. Her previous 18-hole low score was an 81. Schwartz took 20
th, and Amundson finished tied for 24
th after shooting a season-low 75 Sunday. She took 11 strokes off her first-round score. Hillemeier, a sophomore, also took seven strokes off her first-round score Monday.
Both Olson (155) and Schwartz (160) also set career-lows for 36-hole scores at the D3 Classic.
The team’s previous school record for 18-hole team score was a 307, set at the 2017 MIAC Championships.
CSB returns to the course Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17, for the St. Kate’s Invite in Prior Lake.
