ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Alex Johnson has been a consistent presence on both offense and defense to start her senior season with the College of Saint Benedict basketball team, and last week was no different.
Johnson averaged a double-double in a pair of wins last week to help CSB push its record to 6-0, and had a career game in the process. For her week, Johnson is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Johnson and the Bennies started the week at home last week with an 82-67 win over Concordia. Johnson notched eight points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Her biggest game of the week, however, came in a road win against Hamline. With the Pipers hanging tough throughout the third quarter, Johnson scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high and career-high 19 rebounds – including nine offensive rebounds – to help her team hold off the Pipers for a 66-52 win. She also had three assists, three steals and three blocked shots. That win pushed CSB’s record to 6-0 – its best start since 2016-17.
On the week, Johnson averaged 11 points, 13 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots, 2.5 steals and 2.5 assists. Her double-double against Hamline marked her second of the season.
With one game left before break, Johnson leads the MIAC with 10.1 rebounds per game and 19 total blocked shots. She is also sixth in the conference with a .589 field-goal percentage, and in the top 20 in scoring at 12.0 points per game. She has led the team in scoring three times – including a career-high 22 points to start the season – and in rebounding in all seven games the team has played.
Saint Benedict wraps up the semester Wednesday, Dec. 10, when it hosts Gustavus at 7 p.m. The Bennies look to bounce back after a one-point home loss to Carleton Monday.
