Carla Meyer CSB Athlete of the Week (3/1/21)

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – In her first season with the College of Saint Benedict basketball team, Carla Meyer has made an immediate impact – including a milestone win over a rival last week.

Meyer led the team in scoring and had a big fourth quarter to help the Bennies beat St. Thomas 88-83 last week to lift coach Mike Durbin to his 700th win and help her team beat the Tommies for the first time since 2013. She added another double-digit scoring performance Saturday in the team’s loss at Bethel.

For her big week, Meyer is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.

Wednesday may have been Meyer’s first game against the Tommies – and it will likely be her only as UST transitions to Division I in 2021-22 – but she made it count. She scored a career-high 16 points and led the team in scoring to snap a 14-game losing streak to the Tommies and end the rivalry on a high note.

Nine of Meyer’s 16 points came in a pivotal fourth quarter where the Tommies got within two points late before the Bennies pulled away. She went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 1:44 of play to help seal the win. Meyer also chipped in with three assists and three rebounds.

The result Saturday against the Royals wasn’t what CSB was hoping for after a big win Wednesday, but Meyer had another big day. She added 12 points to her weekly total – the fifth time she has scored double digits this season – and also dished out four assists.

On the week, Meyer averaged 13.5 points and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 60 percent from the field. She is currently second in the MIAC with an average of 4.8 assists per game thanks to back-to-back eight-assist performances. She is also 16th with a field-goal percentage of .419 and 11th in scoring at 12.0 points per game.

CSB’s next – and last – scheduled contest in 2021 is Saturday, March 6, when the team hosts Augsburg at 4 p.m. in Claire Lynch.
