MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Senior
Aurora Opsahl netted her seventh goal of the season, but the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (10-9-3, 7-7-1 MIAC) fell 3-1 to No. 4 Augsburg (19-2-1, 14-1-0 MIAC) on Thursday, February 13, at Ed Saugestad Rink.
With the loss, St. Ben's drops to 10-9-3 overall and 7-7-1 in the MIAC, holding sixth place in the league standings. Augsburg extended its lead at the top of the MIAC, improving to 14-1-0 in league play and 19-2-1 overall. The two teams will face off again on Friday with a 6 p.m. puck drop at Ritsche Arena.
Opsahl's goal ties her with
Shae Stinnett for the team lead in points with 14. She has scored in four of the last five games and now boasts 37 career goals, ranking sixth all-time at CSB. Opsahl has accumulated 70 points (37G, 33A), placing her seventh all-time in program history. Senior
Kate Moffatt was in net for CSB, recording 35 saves in the game.
Augsburg took an early lead with a power play goal from Nora Stepan in the first period and added an even-strength goal from Stepan in the second, giving the Auggies a 2-0 advantage. Stepan's goals were her 13th and 14th of the season.
The Bennies fought back with a power play goal of their own, as Opsahl found the back of the net at 3:25 in the second period. She was assisted by
Ava Stinnett (4th assist of the season) and
Jenna Timm (6th assist of the season), narrowing the gap to 2-1.
Later in the period, Augsburg sealed the game with another power play goal, as Molly Grundhoffer scored her ninth goal, assisted by Emily Cronkhite (12th assist of the season) and Ella Olson (4th assist of the season) at 12:45.
Opsahl led CSB with eight shots, five of which were on goal. Augsburg outshot the Bennies, 38-24, including a 13-8 edge in the first period, 11-7 in the second, and 14-9 in the third. The Auggies also won 52.9% of face-offs, going 27-for-51.
Ava Stinnett led CSB in the circle, winning 11 of 19 face-off battles.
