Buslee and Morgan lead CSB Basketball past Dubuque, 75-42, at the Cornell Classic

Bennies win second straight and sit tied for first place in the MIAC

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Drew Buslee scored 16 points and swiped five steals, and senior guard Megan Morgan added 11 points as the College of Saint Benedict rolled past Dubuque, 75–42, in the Cornell Classic on Saturday.

The Bennies, now 3–1, showcased their depth with 14 players reaching the scoring column. Buslee (Eagan, Minn.) led CSB in scoring for the third time this season, going 5-for-10 from the field, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-4 at the line while anchoring the defensive effort. Morgan (Winona, Minn.) added 11 points on efficient 4-for-6 shooting. Senior forward Kira Young (Hudson, Wis.) contributed nine points, and first-year guard Kate Ebert (South St. Paul, Minn.) posted career highs with seven points and four assists.

CSB's defense set the tone, forcing 32 turnovers and collecting 17 steals, which translated into a dominant 37–7 advantage in points off turnovers. The Bennies also controlled the paint, outscoring Dubuque, 36–18, inside.

Offensively, St. Ben's shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor, knocked down six three-pointers, and went 17-of-25 at the free-throw line. On the other end, the Bennies limited Dubuque to just 23.8 percent shooting and held themselves to only 14 turnovers.

CSB stormed out to an 11–2 lead in the first quarter behind five early points from Young and strong work at the free-throw line. Morgan and Buslee combined for a surge that pushed the margin to 19–4 with just over two minutes left in the period. The Bennies' defense smothered Dubuque early, allowing only one field goal in the quarter.

In the second period, Emma Theisen's putback extended the lead to 23–4, and Morgan's three-pointer helped stretch the advantage to 26–6. Young continued her strong first half with a jumper for a 29–6 cushion, and Lily Ryan added a late three as CSB took a 39–16 lead into halftime. Buslee had 10 points by the break, with Young adding nine and Morgan seven.

Morgan hit two quick baskets in the third quarter to push the lead to 46–19. Buslee followed with a three-point play and a three-pointer as the Bennies extended the margin to 52–21. Despite shooting just 30.8 percent in the third, CSB stayed firmly in control and carried a 56–29 lead into the final period.

The Bennies opened the fourth quarter by hitting four of their first six shots, stretching the advantage to 64–33 and sealing their third win in four games.

In the second game of the Cornell Classic, CSB will face Nebraska-Wesleyan at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
