SARTELL, Minn. -- The College of Saint Benedict tennis team (7-9, 5-5 MIAC), concluded the regular season by dropping a 9-0 decision to No. 17 ranked Carleton College (15-0, 10-0 MIAC) in MIAC play on Sunday, April 28 at Sta-fit.
Despite the setback, the Bennies will be the No. 6 seed in the MIAC playoffs which begin on Tuesday, April 30. In the first round, CSB will face No. 3 Bethel (7-3) in a quarterfinal matchup.
Saint Benedict is now 7-9 in 2023-24 and concluded the regular season with a 5-5 conference record.
At No. 1 doubles, juniors Ashley Tarrolly and Sophia Jonas fell, 8-0, to Amelia Asfaw and Mary Hose. The pair now have an overall record of 8-4 and hold a 7-3 conference record. At No. 2 doubles, CSB dropped an 8-2 decision as senior Peyton Kopel and junior Greta Nesbit were defeated by the Knights Mariam Nechiporuk and Ingrid Smith. Kopel and Nesbit had their record fall to 10-6 and 8-2 in league play. CSB also dropped the match at No. 3 when first-year Kate Perbix and senior Jane Bodensteiner fell by an 8-2 decision to Kat Smiricinschi and Ryann Witter. Bodensteiner and Perbix have a 7-3 record, including a 6-3 record in MIAC play.
In singles play, the Bennies were swept by the Knights but lost a pair of closely-contest tiebreakers. At No.1 singles, junior
Ashley Tarrolly who is 7-6, 5-5 MIAC, lost the tie-breaker to Asfaw falling, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0, (10-4). Playing at No. 2,
Peyton Kopel dropped to 4-12 and 4-6 in the MIAC as she lost in straight sets to Hose, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles,
Greta Nesbit dropped to 6-10, 4-6 in the MIAC this year after a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Nechiporuk.
Bodensteiner, who is now 7-9 and 5-5 in the conference, dropped the No. 4 singles match to Miriam Shteyman, 6-0, 6-3. Junior
Sophia Jonas fell to 7-7, 5-5 MIAC on the season at No. 5 singles with a tiebreaker loss to Kiley Pickens 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). At No. 6,
Ryanna Steinhaus lost a 6-0, 6-4, decision to Zoe Rose as she finished the regular season with a 5-8 overall record and a 4-5 record in league play.
