CSB Tennis hosts Carleton College on Sunday at Sta-fit

SARTELL, Minn.-- The College of Saint Benedict tennis team (7-8, 5-4 MIAC) will host Carleton College (14-0, 9-0 MIAC) in MIAC play at 11:30 a.m., on Sunday, April 28 as the Bennies close out the regular season at Sta-fit in Sartell, Minn.

Saint Benedict is 7-8 overall and, at 5-4 in the MIAC, sits in fourth place in the conference. The Bennies have conference wins over Hamline; 9-0, St. Scholastica; 6-3, Concordia-Moorhead; 8-1 and St. Olaf College; 7-2 and Saint Mary's; 9-0. CSB took losses against St. Catherine University, 6-3 on April 6; and Macalester College, 5-4 on April 14; Bethel, 6-3 on April 20; and Gustavus Adolphus 8-1 on April 21.

In the Fall, CSB competed at the ITA Regional/Midwest Invite
In the fall, CSB competed at the ITA Regional/Midwest Invite that was hosted on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In singles play, junior Ashley Tarrolly led the way. Tarrolly was the No. 2 seed in the and was given a first-round bye. Throughout the two-day invitational, she defeated Dorothy Dean in two sets (6-1, 6-1) of Loras College (IA). Tarrolly went on to the championship round where she fell to 19th ranked Lauren Douglas of Bethel University. In the Midwest Invite Consolation Class A singles, senior Peyton Kopel had two wins. She defeated Cassie Henderson of Edgewood, 8-2; and Nichole Henning of Grinnell, 8-5 before dropping an 8-2 decision to Emma Thole of Bethel. First-year Kate Perbix also won a pair of matches Midwest Invite Consolation Class B singles. She defeated Bella Tranquilino of Simpson, 8-2, and Hailey Toole of UW-Eau Claire, 8-0, before falling to Ashley Adkisson of UW-Whitewater, 8-2.In doubles play, CSB was led by Tarrolly and Sophia Jonas who were ranked No. 16th, the pair lost their second round match to No. 7 Sofia Sacket and Natalia Smith of Luther, 8-6. 


About the Knights
Carleton, a team that is currently ranked third in region VII in the latest NCAA DIII Tennis poll, is directed by Luciano Battaglini who is in his fifteenth season. The Knights are led by Amelia Asfaw who has a 10-0 singles record. In doubles play, Asfaw and Mary Hose have an overall mark of 9-0.

Series Record
Carleton leads the overall series, 30-to-6. Most recently, the Knights defeated the Bennies 7-2, in Lakeville, Minn., in 2023. In the first ever match, Carleton defeated Saint Benedict, 5-4, on April 22, 1983.

Season/Career Player Notes
Ashley Tarrolly of St. Cloud, Minn., who is 7-5, including 5-4 in the MIAC, at No. 1 singles and 8-4 (7-2 in the MIAC) at No. 1 doubles this season, was All-MIAC and named Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators a year ago. She was regionally ranked No. 6 in singles in NCAA DIII Region VII. Tarrolly has a 21-10 record in her career in singles and 13-10 in MIAC play. In doubles, she has a 20-14 overall record in her career, which includes 12-7 in MIAC play.

Peyton Kopel is 4-11 (4-5 in the MIAC) in singles this year with an 0-3 mark at No. 1 and 4-8 at No. 2. She is 10-5 overall and 9-3 at No. 2 doubles with junior Greta Nesbit. In 2022-23, Kopel was named to the All-MIAC doubles team. In her career, she is now 24-38 in singles and 16-22 in MIAC play. In doubles, Kopel has a 35-28 record, including 21-17 in the MIAC.

Greta Nesbit, a junior mathematics major from Le Sueur, Minn., has a 6-9 singles mark, including 5-7 at No. 3.  Nesbit, who is 4-5 in the MIAC in singles, has an 10-5 doubles mark, including 8-1 in the MIAC, with Kopel at No. 2. Named All-MIAC a year ago, she has a 26-24 overall career singles record, including 16-13 in MIAC play. In doubles, she stands 23-13 with a 16-7 mark in the MIAC.

Jane Bodensteiner, an accounting major from Palatine, Ill., is 7-8, including 5-4 in MIAC play, in singles this season, playing at No. 3 and No. 4. In doubles, she is 10-4, playing at all three spots at various times. Overall, in her career, she has a 32-26 record in singles, which includes a 20-18 MIAC mark. In doubles, she is 37-21 in her career and 22-14 in the MIAC.  

Sophia Jonas is 7-6, including 5-4 in MIAC play, at No. 5 singles and 10-4, including 7-2 in the MIAC, at No. 1 doubles this season. She is 17-19 in singles and 23-20 in doubles in her two years at CSB. 

First-year Ryanna Steinhaus of Litchfield, Minn., is 5-7 (4-4 in MIAC play) at No. 6 singles and 0-1 in doubles play. First-year Kate Perbix is 8-5 (6-2 in the MIAC) in doubles play this year.
