WINONA, Minn. -- With a sweep in the singles and doubles, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team (7-6, 5-2 MIAC) earned a 9-0 MIAC win over Saint Mary's University (9-9, 2-7 MIAC) on Friday April 19, at the Winona Tennis Center.
With the victory, Saint Benedict improved to 5-2 in conference play which stands in fourth place in the MIAC. Overall, CSB is 7-6 with a conference match against Bethel University (April 20) at 2 p.m., at the Rogers (Minn.) Tennis Center.
Against the Cardinals, CSB dominated play in both singles and doubles. It was a solid team effort, noted CSB head coach
Jack Bowe.
"We had a great showing today. It was a really nice team win," said Bowe. "We competed hard and showed exceptional energy and focus."
In doubles competition, juniors
Ashley Tarrolly and
Sophia Jonas moved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play with an 8-3 win over Natalie Peterson and Elena Ruzevich of Saint Mary's. At No. 2 doubles, CSB's
Greta Nesbit and
Peyton Kopel moved to 9-4 overall and a perfect 7-0 in MIAC play after an 8-2 victory over Emily Dondelinger and Emily Henderson. At No. 3 doubles, senior
Jane Bodensteiner and first-year
Kate Perbix cruised to an 8-2 win over Ella Boomgaarden and Lillian Kimber. As a result, Bodensteiner/Perbix improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC.
In singles competition, CSB captured all six singles matches. At No. 1 singles, junior
Ashley Tarrolly won in straight sets for a fifth time this year after a 7-5, 6-1 decision against Natalie Peterson. With the win, Tarrolly is now 6-4 overall, including 4-3 in the MIAC.
Playing at No. 2 singles, Kopel improved to 4-9 overall and 4-3 in league play, by registering a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Dondelinger.
At No. 3 singles, Nesbit won a hard-fought decision against SMU's Elena Ruzenvich. Nesbit, who is now 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the MIAC, earned a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory.
Senior Jane Bodensteiner pushed her season record to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the MIAC after a straight set 6-3, 6-3 win over Boomgarden at No. 4 singes.
At No. 5, Jonas cruised past Peyton Buerman in straight sets by scores of 6-2, 6-2. As a result, Jonas is now 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the MIAC.
Playing at No. 6 singles, first-year
Ryanna Steinhaus won her third straight match with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Kat Stiegel. As a result, Steinhaus, who has four straight sets wins, evened her overall mark at 5-5 and is now 4-2 in the MIAC.
