CSB Tennis falls to Macalester, 5-4, in MIAC play

ST PAUL, Minn. – Despite a win in singles and a sweep in doubles, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team (6-6, 4-2 MIAC) dropped a narrow 5-4 decision against Macalester (9-4, 4-2 MIAC) in MIAC play on Sunday (April 14) at Hayden Courts in St. Paul, Minn.
 
With the loss, the Bennies dropped to 4-2 in league play and a tie for fourth place. Overall, CSB is 6-6 with a match against Saint Mary's University on Friday (April. 19) at 2 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Athletic Complex in Winona, Minn.
 
Against the Scots, CSB recorded three wins in doubles for the second straight match but won just one in singles in falling, 5-4. CSB lost three of the five singles matches in tiebreakers.
 
At No. 1 doubles, juniors Ashley Tarrolly and Sophia Jonas moved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play with an 8-4 win over Meg Ulrichand Sydney Ellison of Macalester. At No. 2 doubles, the Bennies had a close victory as Greta Nesbit and Peyton Kopel moved to 8-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 in MIAC play after an 8-6 victory over Savannah Haugen and Elizabeth Trevathan.  At No. 3 doubles, senior Jane Bodensteiner and first-year Kate Perbix recorded an 8-2 win over Amanye Reynolds and Megan Twomey. As a result, Bodensteiner/Perbix improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.
 
In singles, CSB lost three tiebreakers in closely-contested matches. At No. 1 singles, Tarrolly fell to Ellison 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). After the setback, Tarrolly is now 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC.
 
Playing at No. 2 singles, Kopel dropped to 3-9 overall and 3-3 in league play after a loss against Reynolds, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
 
Nesbit had a 6-4, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6) loss to Ulrich at No. 3 singles in another tiebreaker. As a result, Nesbit is now 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC.

No. 4 singles, senior Jane Bodensteiner had a 7-5, 6-4 setback to Trevathan and now is 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.
 
Jonas had a three-match winning streak stopped in falling by scores of 6-1, 6-2 to Savannah Haugen at No. 5 singles. Jonas is now 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.
 
At No. 6 singles, first-year Ryanna Steinhaus won her second straight match by scores of  6-3, 6-2 over Sedona Crosby. As a result, she is now 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC.
