COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – With four wins in singles and a sweep in doubles, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team (6-5, 4-1 MIAC) earned its fourth win in five matches with a 7-2 decision over St. Olaf (9-5, 3-3 MIAC) on Saturday (April 13) at the Chang Tennis Complex.
In the midst of a four-match home stretch, CSB played outdoors for the first time this year. And, the team, directed by head coach
Jack Bowe, won its second straight MIAC match as the Bennies moved to 4-1 in league play and a tie for third place. Overall, CSB is 6-5 with a match against Macalester on Sunday at 3 p.m. in St. Paul.
"It was a really nice performance by our team today as they continue to show growth as a team," said CSB head coach
Jack Bowe. "We had a great day all around with solid play at the net and on the baseline," he said. "We battled and came through in some really tough matches that ended in tiebreakers."
Against the Oles, CSB rolled to three straight wins in doubles and then won 4-of-6 singles matches to earn the 7-2 win. CSB earned wins in tiebreakers in three of the singles wins and also in No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, juniors
Ashley Tarrolly and
Sophia Jonas moved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play with an 8-5 win over Olha Zubarieva and Sarah Clark of St. Olaf. At No. 2 doubles, the Bennies had a hard-fought verdict as
Greta Nesbit and
Peyton Kopel moved to 7-4 overall and a perfect 5-0 in MIAC play after an 8-7 victory over Fiona O'Flaherty and Alexandra Berns, 8-7 and 7-3 in the tiebreaker. At No. 3 doubles, senior
Jane Bodensteiner and first-year
Kate Perbix recorded an 8-4 win over Jane Spading and Anna Secor. As a result, Bodensteiner/Perbix improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC.
Tarrolly captured the No. 1 singles match by defeating Zubarieva in a tiebreaker, winning 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2). Tarrolly is now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC.
Kopel improved to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in league play after she also won a tiebreaker over Spading, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3).
Nesbit took a 5-7, 3-6 loss to Berns at No. 3 singles. As a result, Nesbit is now 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC. Senior
Jane Bodensteiner took a 4-6, 6-7 (2-7) setback at No. 4 singles to O'Flaherty. She is 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC.
Jonas matched a win in doubles with her third straight singles win at No. 5 with a second straight set win by 6-0, 6-2 over Clark. Jonas is now 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC.
At No. 6 singles, first-year
Ryanna Steinhaus (3-5, 2-3 MIAC) finished with her third win of the season after a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory in a tiebreaker.
