CSB Tennis set to play five matches during spring break trip to Florida

Junior Ashley Tarrolly leads the way with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles

ST JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team (1-1) is set to play five matches during its annual spring break trip on March 4-8 in Florida. 

The Bennies will compete against North Carolina A &T State University and Allegheny College on Mar. 4 at the USTA National Campus. On Wednesday, March 6 in Kissimmee, Fla., CSB will face Cedarville before playing Wheaton College (Ill.) on Thursday, Mar. 7 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Bennies conclude the trip with a match against Ursinus College on Mar. 8 at the USTA National Campus.

Spring Break Schedule

About the Aggies (2-0)
North Carolina A&T is directed by head coach Dejon Bivens, who is in her third season. The Aggies are led in singles by Nour Gueblaoui (2-0) and Tabeth Tadoum in the No. 1 doubles position (1-1). NC defeated North Carolina Wesleyan, 4-3, and King University (Tenn.), 5-0.

About the Gators (10-2)
Allegheny is directed by head coach Dave Hayden who begins his third season. The Gators are led in singles by Omega Ba (6-2) and the duo of Noelle Kid, Rei Etsumi at doubles. A year ago, Allegheny split the PAC Championship Tournament by defeating Westminster, 5-1, and falling to Grove City in the finals, 5-2.

About the Yellowjackets (7-3)
Cedarville University is directed by first-year head coach Karl Monson as the program is in its 50th season. CU is led in singles by Calista Bobula (6-2)  and in doubles by Bobula and Faith Monson. The Yellowjackets defeated Midway (KY), 5-2, and fellow to Georgetown (KY), 5-2, in recent play on Feb. 23.

About the Thunder (9-2) 
Wheaton is directed by head coach Jane Nelson, who begins her 38th season. WU is led in singles play by Lydia Adams (9-2). Madeline Gentry and Adams are 7-4 at No. 1 doubles. The Thunder defeated Concordia (Wis.), 5-4, on Feb. 24.

About the Bears (2-0)
Ursinus is directed by head coach Pete Smith in his ninth season. Smith has an overall record of 75-54. The Bears are led by Allie Armour in singles play (1-1) At No. 1 doubles, Armour has teamed with Bella Vassalluzzo for a 2-0 record. As a team, the Bears two wins came during the fall semester after defeating  Alvernia University, 7-2, and Goucher College, 6-3, on Sept. 16.

In the Fall, CSB competed at the ITA Regional/Midwest Invite

In the fall, CSB competed at the ITA Regional/Midwest Invite that was hosted on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In singles play, junior Ashley Tarrolly led the way. Tarrolly was the No. 2 seed in the and was given a first-round bye. Throughout the two-day invitational, she defeated Dorothy Dean in two sets (6-1, 6-1) of Loras College (IA). Tarrolly went on to the championship round where she fell to 19th ranked Lauren Douglas of Bethel University. In the Midwest Invite Consolation Class A singles, senior Peyton Kopel had two wins. She defeated Cassie Henderson of Edgewood, 8-2; and Nichole Henning of Grinnell, 8-5 before dropping an 8-2 decision to Emma Thole of Bethel. First-year Kate Perbix also won a pair of matches Midwest Invite Consolation Class B singles. She defeated Bella Tranquilino of Simpson, 8-2, and Hailey Toole of UW-Eau Claire, 8-0, before falling to Ashley Adkisson of UW-Whitewater, 8-2.In doubles play, CSB was led by Tarrolly and Sophia Jonas who were ranked No. 16th, the pair lost their second round match to No. 7 Sofia Sacket and Natalia Smith of Luther, 8-6. 

Recap - Bennies falls to DII SCSU 
In the opener, CSB dropped a 6-1 decision against NCAA DII St. Cloud State. Ashley Tarrolly won at No. 1 singles by defeating Maria Paz Aoki, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2. In No. 2 singles competition senior Peyton Kopel fell in the tiebreaker to Oriana Grott 6-4, 2-6, 1-0, (10-6). Junior Greta Nesbit fell in straight sets to Claudia Perez Munoz at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Jane Bodensteiner was defeated by Johana Brower, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 4 singles play. At No. 5 singles, sophomore Brooke Beier dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Lara Schaefer. At No. 6 singles, first-year Ryanna Steinhaus dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Maria Molitor. In doubles, SCSU won all three matches by 6-3 scores to grab the point. At No. 1 singles, Tarrolly/Bodensteiner fell to Munoz-Perez/Schaefer, 6-3. At No. 2, Kopel/Nesbit also lost, 6-3, to Paz Aoki/Brower of SCSU. In the No. 3 doubles, Beier and first-year Kate Perbix dropped a 6-3 decision to Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell.

Recap - CSB rolls to 9-0 win in MIAC opener
In the home MIAC opener, Saint Benedict swept singles and doubles while recording a 9-0 win over Hamline. With the win, CSB moved to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MIAC. The Bennies were led by junior Ashley Tarrolly, who won at No. 1 singles and paired with Sophia Jonas to win at No. 1 doubles. At No. 1 singles, Tarrolly moved to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Chloe Reyes. With the win she is now 2-0 on the season and 16-5 in her career. At No. 2 singles, senior Peyton Kopel improved to 1-1 with her 24th career win after a straight set 6-1, 6-0 win over Ashley Pitzen of Hamline. The Bennies also had straight set wins in the other matches. Junior Greta Nesbit, who improved to 1-1 on the season and earned her 21st career win, recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Christine Muller at No. 3 singles. Senior Jane Bodensteiner, who is also 1-1, had her 26th career win after a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lynn Nguyen. At No. 5, junior Sophia Jonas recorded a straight set win in moving to 1-0 on the year. With her 10th career win, Jonas had a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Elanna Kohner. Then at No. 6 singles, Brooke Beier (1-1) earned her first win of the season with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Vanessa Pham. At No. 1 doubles, Tarrolly and Jonas teamed up for the first time in their career and registered an 8-3 win over Hamline's team of Muller and Natalie Randall. At No. 2 doubles, Kopel/Nesbit picked up an 8-2 win over Nguyen/Kohner. And, at No. 3 doubles, Bodensteiner/Beier earned an 8-7 (7-2) win.

Season/Career Player Notes
Tarrolly of St. Cloud, Minn., who is 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles this season, was All-MIAC and named Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators. She was regionally ranked No. 6 in singles in NCAA DIII Region VII. Until a loss in the playoffs, she had eighth straight victories, finishing 9-3 overall with a 7-2 mark in league play. Tarrolly, an economics major, had six straight set wins and was 3-1 in a tiebreaker. In doubles, she was 7-6 overall with a 4-5 record in league play, including 6-6 with Kopel. Tarrolly has a 16-5 record in her career in singles. 

In 2022-23, Kopel was named to the All-MIAC doubles team after putting together a 7-10 record, including 2-3 at No. 1 and 5-6 at No. 2 singles. In doubles, she was 6-6 overall with a 4-5 record with Tarrolly at No. 1. In her career, she is now 24-25 in singles with a 19-25 doubles record. This season, Kopel has a 1-1 record in both singles and doubles play.

Nesbit, a junior mathematics major from Le Sueur, Minn., has a 1-1 record in No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles this year. A year ago, she had a 9-8 overall record, including 7-3 in MIAC play as she earned All-MIAC.  In 2022-23, she was 2-3 at No. 2 singles with a 7-5 mark at No. 3. In her career she is now 21-16 in singles and 14-9  in doubles. 

Bodensteiner, an accounting major from Palatine, Ill., was 10-6 a year ago, including 6-4 in the MIAC. She was 7-5 at No. 4 singles and finished the year with a 5-5 mark. In doubles, Bodensteiner finished 12-3 with a 7-2 mark in league play, including 8-1 at No. 3 and 4-2 and No. 2. Overall in her career, she has a 25-18 record in singles. In doubles she has a 27-16 overall mark. In singles in her career, she is 19-13 in the MIAC and is 15-13 in the MIAC in doubles. This season, Bodensteiner has a 1-1 record in both singles and doubles play.

Jonas, who has 1-0 at No. 3 singles and 1-0 in No. 1 doubles this season, has competed in 12 doubles matches with a 5-7 record made eight single match appearances, recording a 2-6 mark. She is 9-11 in singles and 11-14 in doubles in her two years at CSB.  

Beier, a sophomore from Foley, Minn., is 1-1 in singles in 2023-24 and sits 3-3 in her career. She is 0-1 in doubles play. Kira Young, a sophomore from Hudson, Wis., was 2-0 in doubles a year ago.   

The Bennies will also have several first-year standouts on the team including Georgia Kruchten, Staples, Minn.; Marie Labenski, Northfield, Minn.; Ella Marohl, St. Cloud, Minn.; Kate Perbix, Elk River, Minn.; Emily Rieland, Melrose, Minn.; and Ryanna Steinhaus, Litchfield, Minn., who is 0-1 in singles. Perbix played at No. 3 doubles against St Cloud State.

Following spring break competition , CSB will travel to Duluth, Minn. for a road test against MIAC conference opponent St. Scholastica on Saturday (Mar. 23).
