ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a closely contested match, the College of Saint Benedict (8-5, 5-2 MIAC), which had singles wins from
Ashley Tarrolly and
Peyton Kopel, dropped a 6-3 decision to Macalester (10-4, 6-1 MIAC) on Saturday (April 15) at Sta-Fit.
"We had our chances tonight but give Macalester credit, they were able to come up and win some big points," said CSB head coach Jack Bowe, whose team will travel to Gustavus Adolphus on April 16 in St. Peter, Minn. "We competed but just came up a little short," he said.
The Bennies won the top two singles matches and the No. 1 doubles. In all three of those matches, CSB was led by
Ashley Tarrolly and
Peyton Kopel, who were recently regionally ranked in NCAA DIII Region VII.
Tarrolly is now 6-2 overall with a fifth straight win at No. 1 singles. Tarrolly, who was ranked regionally in No. 1 singles, moved to 4-2 in league play with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) decision over Sydney Ellison.
At No. 2 singles,
Peyton Kopel is 7-6 overall and 4-3 in MIAC play after registering a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win in a tiebreaker.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore
Greta Nesbit fell to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in league play after a 6-3, 7-5 setback to Meg Ulrich to Macalester.
Jane Bodensteiner dropped a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 decision to Amalin Sorajja at No. 4 singles. For Bodensteiner, she dropped to 10-2 overall and lost in league play for the first time as she is now 6-1.
Sophomore
Sophia Jonas is 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC after a 6-2, 6-2 setback to Elizabeth Trevathan.
For the first time this year, senior
Maria Bedford lost in singles, and it took a tiebreaker to end her 12-match winning streak. Bedford, who is now 12-1 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC, was defeated by Savannah Haugen of Macalester, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). Up to this match, Bedford had set the program's longest consecutive winning streak to open the season.
In doubles play, CSB won 1-of-3 matches. At No. 1 doubles, the regionally ranked squad of Tarrolly/Kopel defeated Ellison/Ulrich of Macalester, 8-5. Tarrolly/Kopel now stand 6-2 overall and 4-2 in MIAC Play.
At No. 2 doubles, Bodensteiner/Bedford fell to Reynolds/Sorajja, 8-6. As a team, Bedford/Bodensteiner is now 9-2 and 5-1 in the MIAC as they lost for the first time this year.
Jonas/Nesbit fell to 1-3 on the season and 1-3 in league play after losing a close match with Trevathan/Haugen, 8-7 (10-8) in a battle to the last point.
