With an 8-1 win over Concordia, CSB Tennis moves to 7-3 with 3rd straight win

Bennies sit in 5th at 4-1 in the MIAC

FARGO, N.D. – A sweep of doubles and five singles wins lifts the College of Saint Benedict (7-3, 4-1 MIAC) to its fourth victory in five matches with a 8-1 MIAC decision over Concordia College (9-8, 2-5 MIAC) at Courts Plus on Saturday afternoon (March 25, 2023).

With the victory, CSB has won three straight and seven of 10 matches in 2023.  Over the last three matches, including two in MIAC play, the Bennies have won 25-of-27 games. In league play, they have earned wins in 16 of the past 18 games. With a third straight league win, CSB is now 4-1 in the MIAC and sit in fifth place.

"I was really pleased with our performance on the road," said head coach Jack Bowe. "We had strong efforts from everyone and we came up with consistent play throughout singles and doubles," added Bowe, whose team will travel to face Hamline in MIAC play on April 1 in St. Paul, Minn.

Once again, senior Maria Bedford led the way with another straight set win as she improved to 10-0 on the season and to 5-0 in MIAC play as well as 5-0 at No. 6 singles. Today, she recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Erin Borchard.

Moving to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC was junior Jane Bodensteiner, who won her fifth straight match with a straight set win at No. 3 singles. Bodensteiner, who is 1-1 at No. 3, captured a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anna Hacker . 

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Greta Nesbit improved to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC after a straight set win of 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4 over Mary Skorich. 

Senior Anne Bowe also had a straight set win 6-2, 6-3 over Emily Savageau. With the victory, Bowe evened her record at 4-4  and is now 3-0 in conference play and 2-1 at No. 4 singles.

Sophomore Sophia Jonas picked up her first win in singles with a straight set win of 6-1, 6-4 over Lizzie Allan. Jonas is now 1-1 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

Concordia College's win in singles was at No. 1 where Raquel Egge took a 6-0, 6-2 victory against CSB junior Peyton Kopel, who dropped to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC. 
 
CSB's No. 1 doubles team of Bowe/Kopel rolled to an 8-5 decision over Egge/Borchard. With the win Bowe/Kopel improved to 2-2 on the year and 1-0 in league play.

At No. 2 doubles, Bodensteiner/Bedford continued to win, moving to 8-1 after an 8-6 victory over Hacker/Allan. In league play, they are now 4-0 and have a 4-1 record at No. 2.

The No. 3 doubles team of Nesbit/Jonas registered a win in a tiebreaker with an 8-7 (7-4) decision over Savageau and Julia Wolf. It is the first time that Nesbit and Jonas have played doubles together this year.

Notes - Through 10 matches, the Bennies sit 42-18 overall in singles play and have a 24-6 mark in conference play. CSB is 10-0 at No. 5; 8-2 at both No. 4 and No. 6 and 6-4 at No. 3 with a 5-5 mark at both No. 1 and No. 2. In doubles, CSB is 21-9 and owns a 10-5 mark in league play. At No. 3 doubles, the Bennies sit 9-1 with a 6-4 record at both No. 1 and No. 2.
