Bennies drop heartbreaker to Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - The second and final day of tournament play concluded for the CSB soccer team in Virginia Beach, this time taking on the host of the tournament, Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Bennies started off strong on offense with an early shot on net from Abby Willenbring, just 53 seconds into the half, that was picked up by the Marlins goalkeeper. Lindsay Mueller and Erica Golenzer both added shots on goal in the first ten minutes of the half but both were saved by VWU.

Addison Stephani added two shots in the 17th minute and each team had a few offensive scoring chances late in the half with corner kicks but at the end of the half the score was locked at 0-0.

The second half began and the Marlins kicked up their game into high gear, generating seven shots and having three corner kick chances within the first seven minutes. The rest of the half would be back and forth control of offense, with the Bennies dominating with shots and then near the end of the half the Marlins take over control offensively once more.

In the 85th minute, the Marlins break the scoring drought, sneaking one past the Bennie goalkeeper off a corner kick play.

Paige Kahlmeyer played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Bennies, finishing with three saves. Addison Stephani, Lindsay Mueller, and Ella Young each had two shots for the Bennies. Virginia Wesleyan edged the Bennies in shots 20-11, both teams had 4 shots on goal.

Next up for the Bennies will be home opener at CSB Soccer Field on September 10th against UW- Eau Claire. The game begins at 1 p.m.
