Bennie soccer sneaks by Stout in 1-0 road win

MENOMONIE, Wis. - The College of Saint Benedict soccer team took a trip across the border to Wisconsin for their second game of the weekend to take on the UW-Stout Blue Devils this evening.

The reoccurring theme of early offensive pressure for the Bennie soccer team continues in the beginning of the first half against the Blue Devils. Erica Golenzer kicks off the offensive attack with a shot on net in the 1st minute to test the Blue Devils goalkeeper early with a save. Stout would have two chances to score in the 4th and 8th minutes, but goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer would make both saves. The Bennies would attempt five more shots in the first 15 minutes of the half, keeping the Blue Devils defense on their toes. However, at the halftime buzzer the score would be deadlocked at 0-0 between the two clubs.

The second half would see the Bennies barrage the Blue Devils goalkeeper with five more shots on goal within the first six minutes, all of them saved by the keeper. The Blue Devils would attempt to bring it back into their control, putting a shot on CSB goalkeeper Annie Waters, but they were unable to get it by her. In the 58th minute, the work the Bennies had been putting in against the Stout defense finally paid off. Abby Willenbring takes a shot and scores to put CSB up 1-0. The final buzzer sounds and the Bennies hold on to the one goal to take home the win.

Goalkeepers Paige Kahlmeyer and Annie Waters each played 45 minutes, Kahlmeyer had two saves and Waters had four saves in the win. Erica Golenzer led the Bennies with five shots, three of those shots on goal. The Bennies finished with a season high 20 shots, 12 being on goal. UW-Stout finished with eight shots, six of them on goal.

The Bennies will be on the road again next weekend as they take on Gustavus in St. Peter for a MIAC match up on Saturday, September 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
