Bennies drop MIAC opener 2-1 to St. Kate's in championship rematch

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict soccer team hit the road this afternoon for their first MIAC matchup, and it happened to be a rematch last year's MIAC Championship game, against the St. Kate's Wildcats.

The Bennies had to hold off the Wildcats early, senior goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer saving a St. Kate's shot just 33 second into the half. Erica Golenzer added a shot on goal for the Bennies in the 6th minute, saved by the Wildcats goalkeeper. The Wildcats offense would break past the Bennie defense early unfortunately, scoring in the 12th minute to take the lead.

CSB would try to overcome the early goal, getting shots on goal from Addison Stephani, Ella Young, and Alli Voss in the next sixteen minutes of play. The Bennies would hold onto the offensive power during the remainder of the half, getting one more shot from Abby Willenbring in the 37th minute. The buzzer sounded with the Bennies down 1-0 at the half.

The beginning of the second half would see back and forth possession from both teams, each generating a few shots and attempts to score. In the 73rd minute, St. Kate's would break the back-and-forth momentum, scoring their second goal of the game to take the 2-0 lead over CSB. In a last chance effort to even the score, Alli Voss would get one past the St. Kate's goalkeeper in the 85th minute to cut the Wildcats lead to 2-1 but there just wasn't enough time to keep the momentum going for the Bennies.

Paige Kahlmeyer played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Bennies, finishing with four saves. Alli Voss lead the Bennies with 3 shots on goal, Erica Golenzer and Abby Willenbring each had one shot on goal. The Wildcats just edged the Bennies in shots 10-7, with St. Kate's having six on goal and the Bennies having five.

The Bennies will be back at home on Sept. 17th to take on the Saint Mary's Cardinals at 1 p.m.
